Ocean City boys, girls win Cape May County Track and Field Championships

OCEAN CITY – Red Raider Garrett Sampson was a triple winner leading the boys team to victory at the Cape May County Track and Field Championships May 5 at Ocean City High School.

Red Raiders Ella Miller and Carly Godfrey each won two individual events as the Ocean City girls continued their dominance of the meet.

The host school won the girls and boys meets with 141 and 186 points, respectively.

Middle Township boys were second with 68 points, and the girls were second with 98.  The Lower Cape May Regional High School boys were third with 53 points and the girls were third with 69 points.

Wildwood Catholic was fourth among the girls with 25 points and Wildwood fifth with 2 points. For the boys, Wildwood was second with 22 points and Wildwood Catholic third with 4 points.

Sampson, a senior,  had his big day in all the throwing events.

He won the discus, the javelin and the shot put. 

Teammates Jake Chapman, a junior, and sophomore Kaiden Grim were second and third in the discus, fellow Red Raider Trent Ocello, a sophomore, was third in the javelin, and Grim fifth in the shot put.

Senior Jude Govern ruled the sprints for the boys, winning the 100 meters and the 200 meters. 

Another Ocean City senior, John Stamm, was a two-event winner, taking the long jump and the triple jump. Sophomore Trent Odell was second in the triple jump and senior Troy Amstutz fifth. Junior Michael Juskus was fifth in the long jump.

Raider sophomore Logan Steigerwalt was second in the pole vault at 10’6” and teammate Kaiden Janto, a freshman, was fourth.

Ocean City freshman Croix Snyder was second in the high jump and Juskus third.

Sophomore Hayden Tarves was second in the 400 hurdles with teammates Lukas Tuthill and Colin Berich fifth and sixth.

Berich and Tuthill, both seniors, finished second and third in the 110 hurdles and fellow Raider Grayson Baric was fourth.

The Ocean City boys ruled the distance events. Senior Erik Preisner led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 800 meters with junior Keenan Neuman and sophomore Nevin Millstein.

Junior Nathan Aschmann won the 1600 meters with teammate Nolan Palombo, a sophomore, third.

Freshman Jackson Mattern won the 400 meters for Ocean City; teammates Lucas Brooks, a junior, and Jesse Riley, a senior, were third and fourth.

O.C. girls dominate

Miller, a junior, was the speedster in the short sprints at the county meet. She won the 100 meters and 200 meters and added a third-place finish in the long jump. Sophia Pratt, also a junior, was third in the 100; sophomore Julianne Goodman and junior Kai Linthicum were third and fifth in the 200.

Godfrey, another junior, easily dominated the mid-distances, winning the 800 meters and leading a 1-2-3 sweep of the top spots in the 1600 meters with sophomore Riley Tolson and junior Lillian Flora. They all finished within 1.5 seconds of each other.

Tolson won the 3200 meters by nearly a minute. Teammates Gabrielle Henry, a senior, and Julianna Rearick, a sophomore, were second and fourth.

Junior Alana Clevenger won the 400 meters with Goodman and Linthicum fourth and fifth. Freshman Ava Clevenger was fourth in the 400 hurdles.

Sophomores Ally Mensch and Evelyn Ganard were third and fourth in the 100 hurlers.

The girls 4×400 team won the event.

Senior Callie Duff won the high jump for Ocean City and sophomore Ava Beningo won the triple jump. Duff was third and freshman Brecklyn Foley fourth in the triple jump. Duff also placed third in the javelin.

Senior Red Raider Gianna Endicott won the discus and fellow senior Sophia Smith was fourth.

Freshman Ava Franks was fourth in the shot put followed by Endicott and Duff.
