Mustang Rowell, Red Raider McCarthy winners at CAL track meet

BUENA – Mustang Dallas Rowell was a double winner and Red Raider Ben McCarthy continued his dominance in the 3200 meters at the Cape-Atlantic Track and Field Championships Saturday at Buena Regional High School.

Rowell won the long jump and the triple jump for Mainland Regional High School. The junior went a distance of 44 feet 5.5 inches in the triple jump, 3 inches longer than second-place Shamaad Shiggs of Absegami. 

He leaped 22’11” in the long jump, nine inches longer than Raliel Wiggins of Pleasantville High School, who finished second. Mainland sophomore Zyon Gales was sixth at 21’0.75”.

McCarthy, a sophomore, led the 3200 from early on and won the race going away in 10:09.78. The next closest finisher was his teammate, Ryan Jefferson, who just outpaced Mainland senior Brody Miller. Jefferson finished in 10:22.08 and Miler in 10:22.53.

Mainland had three top-six finishers in the pole vault. Senior Jackson Larimer was second at 12’ and juniors Geoffrey Lovett and Kieran Kummings were fifth and sixth, both at 10’6”. Ocean City’s Logan Steigerwalt was seventh at the same height.

Ocean City’s 4×100 team of Troy Amstutz, Jake Chapman, Cole Gareffi and Jude Govern were third in a tight race. They finished in 43.82 seconds, behind first-place Pleasantville (43.12) and second-place Atlantic City (43.33).

Govern, a senior, was third in the 200 meters in 22.66 seconds, just 3/100ths out of first place. Vineland’s Amar’e Williams and St. Augustine Prep’s Jordan Gross both were timed at 22.63 seconds.

Govern was fourth in the 100 meters in 11.35 seconds. Atlantic City’s Jaylen Day won in 11.06.

Mainland sophomore Jack Preissman was fourth in the 800 meters. His time was 2:01.57. Middle Township junior Jamar Mack won in 2:00.19.

Fellow Mainland sophomore Liam Geary was sixth in the 400 meters in 51.18. Prep’s Marc Maccario won in 48.84.

Red Raider senior Garrett Sampson was second in the javelin at 154’10”, not far behind winner Andrew Ollek of Egg Harbor Township, who threw 158’9”. Teammate Trent Ocello, a sophomore, was fifth at 145’.

Sampson was fifth in the discus, throwing 123’10”. Middle Township’s John Wright won at 152’11”. 

The Mustangs’ 4×400 team was sixth in 3:38.26. Pleasantville ran 3:23.7 to win. Running for Mainland were Jayden Sinclair, Sean Scanlon, Devin Santiago and Liam Geary.

Ocean City’s 4×800 team was sixth in 9:18.67. Cedar Creek’s team won in 8:45.64.
