Ocean City, Mainland athletes win SJ track, field titles

Mustang Dirkes is a double winner

FRANKLINVILLE – Mustangs and Red Raiders won titles and placed well at the South Jersey Group III sectional track and field meet at Delsea Regional High School Friday and Saturday.

For Mainland, senior Camryn Dirkes was a double winner and Eva Morrison, Cody Pierce and the boys 4×100 relay team added victories as well.

For Ocean City, senior Owen Ritti won the 800 meter and Elaina Styer won the long jump.

Champions

Dirkes won sectional titles in the javelin and triple jump.  She threw the javelin 118’4”. Teammate Olivia Leap, a fellow senior, was 10th at 93’5” and Ocean City’s Corinne Williams was 14th at 87’5”.

In the triple jump, she went 36’9.25 inches, beating out Styer, who was second at 36’1.75”. Mainland’s Sienna Bodkin was eighth at 33’1” and Kalla Tocci Rogers ninth at 32’4.5”. Ocean City’s Sarah Gleason was 12th at 31’10.25”.

Styer got her own title when she won the long jump with her leap of 17’9.5”. Dirkes was third with her leap of 17’4.25”. Mustang junior Paige Bonczek was 11th at 15’5.25”.

Morrison won the pole vault, clearing 10’6”, teammate Java Stockham, a freshman, was fourth with her height of 9’6”, Ocean City sophomore Skylar Cohen was seventh at 8’6” and Mainland sophomore Lauren Crino  was 10th at 8’.

Pierce won the 200 meters with a time of 21.71 seconds, nearly a half-second ahead of second-place Elijah Jennings of Pennsauken High School. Mustang sophomore Leo Pierre was 14th in 23 seconds flat.

Pierce also finished second in the 400 meters, running it in 49.12 seconds. Pennsauken’s Premier Wynn won in 48.24 seconds.

Ritti won the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.31, just ahead of fellow senior Caleb Messenger of Triton Regional, who finished in 1:57.75. Red Raider teammate Reece Wagner was ninth in 2:06.1.

Mainland’s boys 4×100 relay won the title in 43.09 seconds, one-hundredth of a second ahead of Delsea Regional. Running on the championship relay were Will Murray, Jaden Bergman, Pierce and Pierre.

Medaling and placing at sectionals

Mustang senior Isabelle VandenBerg was second in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:07.68, about a second behind winner Janelle Marshall, who finished in 1:06.44. Teammate Gianna Lucca, a sophomore was 10th in 1:13.34 and Ocean City junior Natalie Hope was 12th in 1:14.17.

VandenBerg was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles in 16.55 seconds and teammate Emma Smith was seventh in 16.82 seconds. Marshall was first in 15.09 seconds. Ocean City’s AnnaMaria Marczyk was 12th in the preliminaries in 17.73 seconds.

Mainland junior Mawali Ossuniyi finished second in the high jump, clearing 6’4”, the same as winner Enrico Barnett of Delsea. Ocean City freshman Hercules Stewart was 13th at 5’6” and senior Dan Givens was 16th at that height.

Mainland sophomore Gillian Lovett had two third-place finishes Friday. Her time of 2:23.97 was good for third place in the 800 meter race, won by Toms River South junior Lily Oliver in 2:18.59.

Lovett ran the 3200 meters in 11:34.85, good for third place, and Ocean City freshman Chloe Care was fourth with a time of 11:48.43. Mainland senior Savannah Hodgens was fifth in 12:01.24, teammate Claudia Booth, a sophomore, was seventh in 12:27.20, and Ocean City senior Abby Inserra was 12th in 12:55.15. Toms River South senior Taylor Guthrie won the 3200 meters in 10:59.62.

Lovett also was fifth in the 1600 meters with her time of 5:25:44, with teammates Ava McDole (5:29.71) and Sophie Goldstein (5:51.02) sixth and 11th and Care 13th in 5:55.29.

Mustang senior Linden Wineland and Ocean City junior Nick Scarangelli were third and fourth, respectively in the 3200 meters. Wineland’s time was 9:37.74 and Scarangelli’s time was 9:53.08. Delsea senior Andrew Littlehales won in 9:10.39. Ocean City’s Chris Sardy, a junior, was seventh in 10:09.99; and freshman Kai Heyman was 14th in 10:33.75.

Wineland was third in the 1600 meters with his time of 4:26.38. Ocean City’s Ritti (4:33.16), Scarangelli (4:33.78) and Heyman (4:52.24) were fifth, sixth and 15th. Andrew Littlehales won in 4:20.51.

Mainland’s 4×800 relay team of Lily Malone, Claudia Booth, Sophie Goldstein and Chloe Malone was second in 10:13.36 behind Winslow Township, which finished in 9:51.43.

Ocean City’s 4×400 relay team was 10th in 4:21.21. Timber Creek won in 3:57.35.

Ocean City’s 4×100 team of Mallory Gould, Tricia Nicoletti, Maggie Halbruner and Naomi Nnewihe was third in 50.06 seconds. Delsea won in 49.32 and Timber Creek was second in 49.39 seconds.

Mainland’s Kalla Tocci-Rogers, a junior, finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 4’10”, teammate Caitlyn Lin was 10th, making 4’8” and Mustang Ava McDole was14th at 4’6”. Ocean City’s Styer was seventh, cleaning 4’8” and teammate McKenna Chisholm was 11th at the same height.

Mustangs Cadence Fitzgerald (35’1”), Naz’Jade Cochran-Hutt (34’8.5”) and Kaitlyn Boggs (34’) were fourth, fifth and ninth, respectively, in the shot put. All three are seniors. Hammonton junior Emma Peretti won with a throw of 38’9”.

Fitzgerald was ninth in the discus with her throw of 103’ and Boggs was 11th at 96’11”. Absegami’s Chiamaka Wokocha won at 119’1”.

The Red Raider boys 4×800 relay team was fourth in 8:25.36. Highland won in 8:09.34. Ocean City’s 4×400 relay was ninth in 3:34.12. Pennsauken won in 3:21.61.

Mainland’s William Murray was fourth in the long jump, going 21’8.75” and Ocean City’s Dan Givens was 12th at 20’0.75”. Timber Creek’s Chace Pearson won at 22’10”.

Red Raider senior Aodhan Daly was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 59.12 and Mainland junior William Spollen was ninth in 59.65. Pennsauken junior Bryce Tucker was in 53.33 seconds. James Burke, an Ocean City sophomore, was 15th in 1:01.77.

Mainland junior Andrew Ramos finished sixth in 16.06 seconds in the finals of the 110 meters hurdles. Givens was ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 16.76 seconds. Tucker won in 14.99 seconds. Mustang Kenneth Park was 10th in 17.04 seconds and Ocean City’s Cole LaBarre was 14th in 17.70 seconds.

Ocean City sophomore Nick Layton was sixth in the pole vault, cleaning 11’. Tyler Raimondi won with a height of 13’.

Layton was seventh in the javelin with his throw of 144’. Teammate Ryan McBride was 12th with a throw of 129’5”. Hammonton’s Austin Hudak won with a throw of 188’11”

Givens was seventh in the triple jump, leaping 43’7”. Timber Creek senior Jaden Johnson won with a jump of 45’11.25”.

Ocean City junior Colin Dice was eighth in the discus with his throw of 125’7” and Mainland freshman Dan Defeo was 10th with a distance of 113’10”.

Nnewihe finished 10th in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with her time of 12.89 seconds. Mainland sophomore Sienna Bodkin was 12th in 13.1 seconds. Winslow Township senior Jaia James won the finals with her time of 12.01 seconds (11.90 preliminaries). Halbruner was 10th in the 400 meters. He r time was 1:01.40. Chloe Jones of Timber Creek won in 57.75 seconds.

Mustang junior Billy Weldon was 11th in the shot put with his throw of 42’2.5”. Jason Nwosu of Delsea won with a throw of 61’3.25”.

Mainland’s Paige Bonczek was 13th in the 200 meters in 27.22 seconds. Jaia James of Winslow won in 24.79 seconds.
