Ocean City ex-police sergeant pleads guilty

Rolls, of Marmora, faces minimum five-year term for second-degree endangering welfare of a child

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Tyrone Rolls, 51, of Marmora, a former Ocean City Police Department sergeant, pleaded guilty Thursday, March 2, to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, which includes a minimum five-year prison term.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced the guilty plea, which took place in Cape May County Superior Court.

Rolls was initially charged on April 7, 2021, and then indicted on Nov. 16, 2021, as result of an investigation conducted by detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, after it was reported Rolls had a sexual relationship with a female juvenile victim.

On March 2, Rolls plead guilty to the charge of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The guilty plea by Rolls includes a minimum 5-year sentence in New Jersey State Prison, a Sex Offense Restraining Order allowing no contact with the victim along with Rolls forfeiting all future public employment, according to Sutherland.

After his state prison term, Rolls would also be subject to registering on the Megan’s Law Sex Offender Registry and parole supervision for the rest of his life.

Rolls will be sentenced by Honorable Judge Bernard E. DeLury, Jr. P.J.Cr. on May 19.

Sutherland thanked all of the detectives involved in bringing this investigation to close along with Senior Assistant Prosecutor Bryna Batton, who prosecuted this case.
