Ocean City Councilman Rotondi not seeking re-election

OCEAN CITY – Second Ward Councilman Tom Rotondi has decided not to run for another term in the May 14 election, leaving former councilman Keith Hartzell and Arlene’s Restaurant’s Paul Stryker as the two candidates for the seat.

Rotondi sent a letter out to his constituents Wednesday letting them know of his decision.

“It is with a mix of emotions that I reach out to inform you of my decision not to run for re-election as your Second Ward representative in the upcoming 2024 election,” Rotondi wrote.

“After careful reflection and consideration, I have been presented with an opportunity for an appointment that is currently awaiting announcement. I believe this offers a distinct chance to serve Ocean City in a different capacity,” he continued. “While this choice wasn’t made lightly, I am genuinely enthusiastic about the potential to contribute to our community in a new and impactful manner.”

The deadline for turning in nominating papers for the May election is 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29.

So far there are nine candidates running for the five seats up for election. Only First Ward Councilman Terry Crowley Jr. was unopposed before the deadline.

With a day to go before the deadline, there are competitive races in three wards and for the remaining at-large council term open because of the resignation of Karen Bergman, who is now working for the city running the Howard S. Stanton Senior Center in the Ocean City Community Center.

Aside from the race in the Second Ward, Third Ward Councilman Jody Levchuk is being challenged by Amie Vaules and Cecelia Gallelli-Keyes is challenging Fourth Ward Councilman Dave Winslow.

Former First Ward councilman Michael DeVlieger and Sean Barnes are seeking the at-large position.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you who supported me during my tenure as your Second Ward councilman,” Rotondi wrote in his letter to constituents. “Your trust and encouragement have been deeply appreciated, and I take great pride in the collaborative efforts we’ve undertaken for the betterment of our ward.”

He added that while not seeking re-election he is dedicated to “safeguarding the essence of Ocean City.”

“I remain committed to serving and standing alongside those who share a passion for preserving our city’s unique way of life,” Rotondi said, noting he will be providing details of his opportunity “in due course.”
