Mustang tennis knocks Ocean City out of playoffs

LINWOOD – The Mustangs entered the South Jersey semifinal with a 17-2 record against 12-5 Ocean City, having beaten the Red Raiders twice this season in heavily contested matches.

The semifinal Thursday, May 28, was the most dominant yet as the Mustangs swept Ocean City 5-0 with only one match going three sets.

Agava beat Ocean City first singles Chase Bowman 6-0, 6-1, Batioja topped second singles Joey Goodman 6-3, 6-3 and Medland won at third singles 6-1, 6-4 over Todd Windfelder.

The second doubles team of Jake Collo and Wilson Stauffer also lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The first doubles was another back-and-forth battle between Raiders  Gabe Meron and Brendan Sardy and Mustangs Angelo and Patel.

The Ocean City duo romped through the first set 6-1, then lost the second 6-4 before falling in the tie-breaking set 10-4.

All four matches between the first doubles teams have gone three sets. The teams split matches during the regular season, then Meron and Sardy beat the Mustang pair for the Cape-Atlantic League crown before meeting again the South Jersey Group III semifinal.
