H. Dewey Powell, Jr., 82

H. Dewey Powell, Jr. revved his engine for the last time on Friday, May 14th as he drove himself into Heaven. He left behind his beloved wife, Terry, stepdaughter Lauren Galvano (Jim), stepdaughter Bonnie Miller (Steve), daughter Pamela Willamson (Al), daughter Holli Mikla (deceased); his grandchildren Jack, Adley, Ella, Holli, Ethan and Joshua (Jennifer); and countless “sons” and “brothers”. Dewey was born in Bridgeton on July 24th, 1938 and was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Harold D. Powell of Ocean City. He lived all his life in Ocean City and Strathmere until moving to Savannah, Ga in 2018. He graduated from Ocean City High School and immediately started his career as an auto mechanic—a genius in his field. He took a break to join the Navy in 1958 as a jet mechanic. After departing the Navy he returned home to Ocean City to continue to serve the town as the 34th Street Fonzi at his Esso and later Exxon gas station. When not at the station he could be found on either his boat or in the surf with a fishing pole in hand and a pile of fish behind him. He will be remembered for his Studebaker (Hoopty) truck and his famous 4-wheel drive Corvette. He was quick witted and always had a “smart” come back or retort. He’s onto the “next case” with a fishing rod in his hand, a milkshake beside him and hot dog on the grill. Friends may call Friday, September 10, 2021 from 11 until 12 0’clock noon at The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ. A time of sharing will begin at 12 o’clock noon. Mask are preferred. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cinncincati, OH 45250-0301 or www.dav.org.
