Construction work, disruptions along Roosevelt Boulevard, 34th Street

OCEAN CITY – Cape May County will be completing concrete work along Roosevelt Boulevard and 34th Street this week. This will include the construction of a curb-lined concrete median located at the approach to the 34th Street Bridge.

Construction will take place between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday and Friday nights, April 30 and May 1. The contractor will reinstall the raised concrete median just east of the bridge. The new concrete median will be formed and concrete placed on the nights of April 30 and May 1. During the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both nights, traffic crossing and approaching the easterly side of the bridge will be alternating, since the roadway is not wide enough to accommodate the construction activity and both active lanes. Uniformed police officers will direct traffic at the easterly bridge approach so that traffic alternates. Delays should be expected. Normal traffic patterns will resume during the day.

After the concrete median is installed, construction activities are scheduled to proceed during normal daytime working hours with normal traffic patterns resuming.

The final surface-course paving will be installed beginning on the night of May 4 and continuing possibly through the night of May 8 during the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Final paving will proceed from the easterly approach of the 34thStreet Bridge to Bay Avenue. Two-way traffic through this section of the roadway will be maintained.

Up to five inches of deep milling and resurfacing will also occur along 34th Street from Bay Avenue to West Avenue. During the paving operations, traffic on this section of 34th Street will be detoured with only local traffic permitted to enter the work zone due to safety concerns. Motorists traveling east along Roosevelt Boulevard will be detoured south onto Bay Avenue, then east onto 35th Street, then to West Avenue. Traffic will continue north along West Avenue back to 34th Street. Traffic heading west along 34th Street will be detoured south onto West Avenue, then west onto 35thStreet, then north onto Bay Avenue, then back to 34th Street/Roosevelt Boulevard. Local traffic will be maintained and businesses will remain open. The detour will be in place during the active paving operation (6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday nights). Normal traffic patterns will resume between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.
