Atlantic County Division of Public Health sees big drop in COVID cases

By DAVID NAHAN/Sentinel staff

There was a huge drop-off in new COVID-19 cases in Atlantic County and no deaths reported over the course of the past week.

“Atlantic County is currently experiencing a decrease in COVID-19 cases and deaths, a trend we hope will continue as more people get vaccinated,” Atlantic County Public Health Officer Patricia Diamond said Monday afternoon.

“At this time 61 percent of our adult population has received at least one dose and 50 percent is fully vaccinated,” she added. “The positive downward trends appear to be related to an increase in vaccine availability and vaccinations. The supply-demand imbalance that was experienced earlier in the year is no longer a factor.”

Between May 4 and Monday, May 10, there were only 190 new cases of COVID-19, continuing the trend of decreases in recent weeks. Over the same period last week, there were 325 cases.

It also was the first time since the middle of last spring there was an individual day in the single digits of new cases. On Monday, only four new cases were reported.

New COVID-19 cases have fallen about 85 percent from their peak in January, when nearly 1,300 were reported in one week. There were weeks during the winter when up to 30 people died in Atlantic County, attributed to the coronavirus.
