Walter Stanley Szczurek

Walter Stanley Szczurek, of Ocean City, departed this life on May 7, 2024. 

For 56 years Walt was happily married to Joyce Elaine nee Graff until her death in 2007. They previously lived in Philadelphia, PA, and summered in Ocean City. Walt and Joyce moved permanently to Ocean City in 2001.

Walt will be sorely missed by his daughter, Peg and her wife, Marion, and by his son, Buddy and his wife, Connie. Walt is survived by his sister, Helen, and his brother, Henry and his wife, Angie. Walt is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessie, Chuck and his partner, Jacque’, Stephanie and her husband, Peter, and Leigh Anne and her husband, Mark. Walt loved his great-grandchildren: Dylan, Rachel, Joyce, Lucas, Parker, Nora and Elliot. His family also included his step-grandchildren, Skip and his wife ,Stacey, Phil and his wife, Christine, and his step-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Breanna, Jack, Philip, Logan, and Ellie. Walt has a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Walt served four years in the U.S. Navy and also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a statistical programming manager for 33 years, and he was recognized on his retirement for distinguished service.

In his retirement years, Walt was an avid golfer and a founding member and past president of Brambley Golf League. Walt was a founding member of the Morvay-Miley American Legion Post #524 where he served as Sargent-at-Arms for many years. Walt volunteered for a variety of committees and programs at the post and was an enthusiastic shuffleboard player.

Walt believed one should live by what he called the 11th commandment: Devote one’s life to God, family, and country – in that order.

His mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, May 17th, 2024 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, St. Damien Parish, 3948 Central Avenue, Ocean City, NJ, where friends may call from 10:00AM until 10:45AM with a VFW service at 10:45AM. Final resting place will be in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to the Morvay-Miley American Legion Post #524, PO BOX 363, Ocean City, NJ 08226.
