OCEAN CITY – Ocean City AARP Chapter 1062 is joining with UMC at The Shores at 1 p.m. April 19 to present, “Understanding Dementia: Exploring the Biology and Basics while Emphasizing Brain Health.”
An interactive discussion on the biology of dementia and the importance of keeping brains sharp and healthy will be in Room 110 of the Ocean City Free Public Library. Michele Musto, volunteer coordinator at UMC The Shores, will be leading the discussion and Q&A. All are welcome.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Library is hosting its bi-annual three-day books sale Monday, April 15, through Wednesday, April 17.
The sale will encompass a variety of items, including books, DVDs, music CDs, audiobook CDs, video games, and magazines.
The book sale will be held at the Cape May Court House branch in the Storytime and Presentation Rooms in the basement. It will begin at 9 a,m, each day and run until 8 p.m. Cash and check payments will be accepted. It is recommended to bring a box or reusable bag.
Pops fundraiser: Antiques appraisal

SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Arts Commission has scheduled a free two-part “My Grown-up and Me” art workshop from 10 a.m. to noon April 20 and 27 at the Senior & Community Center, 22 N. Ambler Road.
The class is for an adult and child, grandchild, relative or friend in first to fourth grade (grown-up must be 18 and older and must remain during the class to work on the project with the child). Participants will make an Andy Warhol-style print (art supplies will be provide).

Juried Photography Show at Arts Center
OCEAN CITY – The Gallery at the Ocean City Arts Center features its “Annual Juried Photography Show” through April 30. The gallery is in the Arts Center, second floor of the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave.
The theme of the show is “Glass.” Photographers were given the challenge to create something specific using glass as a theme. The theme was made to be as broad as possible and glass lends itself to many iterations. Prizes are awarded. This year’s judges are noted area photographers Jacqui Robinson, David Griffin and Frank Smith. The photographers whose works have been selected for the show have produced a myriad of exciting and beautiful interpretations.

Green Thumb plant swap
SOMERS POINT – The Green Thumb Garden Club of Somers Point will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the Somers Point Senior Center on Ambler Road.
This meeting is the annual plant swap. Cancer Support Fundraiser May 22 in A.C.
ATLANTIC CITY — The 10th annual Sip, Savor, Support event to benefit Cancer Support Community New Jersey (CSCNJ) is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House, 672 N. Trenton Ave. in Atlantic City.
The cost is $60 for a single ticket or $110 for a pair of tickets. The cost includes a gourmet buffet and an open bar with beer, wine and cocktails, as well as a raffle.
This year’s event will take place in the Mile Stretch Beer Garden, an outdoor space with live music performed by Chelsea Rae and The Rescue.
All proceeds go directly to the free support programs at CSCNJ for men, women, teens and children affected by all forms of cancer, at any stage of their cancer journey.

Bernadette Peters to perform with Pops; tickets on sale
OCEAN CITY – Tickets for the season-opening Ocean City Pops concert featuring theater, television and film star Bernadette Peters went on sale April 10.
Peters will join the Pops at the Ocean City Music Pier to kick off the 2024 season at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30.
The award-winning actress and singer’s career spans film, television and stage. She won Tony Awards for her roles in the musicals “Annie Get Your Gun” and Song and Dance,” and she received five other nominations and an honorary award. Four of the cast albums on which she starred have won Grammy Awards. Peters starred in films, including “Silent Movie,” “The Jerk” and “Pennies From Heaven.” She and Lea Salonga will return to Broadway in 2025 to star in “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.”

Spring Jamboree slated for May 9
AVALON — In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Cape May County Division of Aging & Disability Services will host the annual Senior Jamboree.
The theme for 2024 is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Avalon Community Center, 30th Street and the beach in Avalon.

Liquor license reform seminar
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce and Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce have scheduled a Liquor License Reform Seminar for May 1 at South 9 Bar & Grille in Cape May Court House.
The forum will provide stakeholders an opportunity to gain insights into the significant changes brought about by Gov. Phil Murphy’s historic legislation. The new laws promise to bring about substantial changes affecting various sectors, including restaurants, craft beverage manufacturers and the handling of inactive liquor licenses.
The seminar aims to address the different types of licenses, changes for craft producers, effects on inactive licenses, inter-municipality transfers and more.
Representatives from the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control will be present to deliver a comprehensive presentation on the liquor license reform policy. Additionally, a panel of speakers will engage in discussions, pose questions to the representatives and offer commentary based on their experiences and expertise. A brief Q&A will follow the program.

Golf tournament set for April 28
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Cape May County’s 4-H Horse Council has scheduled its 20th 4-H Golf Tournament for Sunday, April 28, at Avalon Golf Club in Cape May Court House.
The entry fee of $145 per person/$560 per foursome includes greens fees, carts, registration gifts, door prizes, an Italian buffet dinner and homemade desserts made by 4-H youth.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
All proceeds go directly to 4-H horse project educational costs, youth participation in state and national 4-H leadership events and renovations to the 4-H horse show arena on the 4-H Fairgrounds.
To-date the tournament has contributed $22,000 to the CMC 4-H Memorial Scholarship Fund resulting in 34 college scholarships.

Bible study: Book of Colossians at Tabernacle Baptist

Chamber offers scholarships
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from June 2024 high school graduates planning to pursue a college, university or trade school education.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student from each high school in Cape May County based on the qualifying criteria.
Additionally, home-schooled students are encouraged to apply as well as county resident students who attend high school outside Cape May County and meet all other application criteria.
The Education Foundation provides scholarship opportunity to students in Cape May County who themselves, or whose parents or guardians, are employed by or own a business that is a member of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce.
Since its formation in 2015, the foundation has awarded more than $73,000 in scholarships.

Safe-boating class offered
OCEAN CITY — U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 is offering the Boat America one-day safe-boating course on multiple dates during 2024. Classes will be held at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church at Eighth Street and Central Avenue in Ocean City. The courses are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27, May 18, June 1 and June 15. The cost is $60.
State law requires all operators of power boats complete an approved boating-safety class to obtain a Boating Safety Certificate. The course will provide the knowledge necessary to obtain the certification without the need to study before the class and includes the proctored exam.
Course topics include an introduction to boating, boating law, vessel safety equipment, safe boating, navigation, mishaps and emergencies.

SPBA to present scholarship
SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Business Association has announced that it will award $500 scholarships in spring 2024 in the name of Lou DeScioli to students who work at a business based in Somers Point.
The scholarship awards are inspired by DeScioli, a longtime business and community leader who always believed that a great business is one that strives to make its community better.
All high school seniors and current college students who work at a Somers Point business are eligible to be considered for an award. Applicants must submit an essay of about 500 words describing the impact they have had on the business at which they are employed. The essay should also provide three examples of how their efforts positively affected customer relations and improved business practices.

Call for free Family Crisis Intervention
Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).
FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.
FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.
