More than 40 golfers at Ocean City Brambley League; Hawthorne, Karwowski lead

OCEAN CITY – Last week, more than 40 golfers took to the course as the Brambley Golf League continued its exciting season.

Rich Hawthorne and Joe Karwowski emerged as the overall Low Gross winners, each shooting a 44. They narrowly edged out JoAnn Bonanni, Mary Hughes, Mark Hemmert and Mark Franks by just one stroke. Hemmert’s round of 45, a personal best, secured his position as the Flight B Low Gross winner. Bonanni and Hughes tied for the Ladies Low Gross title with a round of 45, marking a personal best for JoAnn. Walt Thompson was the Senior Division Low Gross winner with an exceptional round of 47, his lowest of the season.

The competition was fierce in the Low Net category. New league player Tom Bowman and Fred Marcell finished in a first-place tie for Flight A Low Net. Pat Zimmermann secured the Flight B Low Net title with a net score of 33, four strokes under his handicap. Bob McNamara, finishing in the money for the second week, took second place honors with a net score of 34. Chris Devaney and Derek Rearden were close behind, finishing in third place with a net score of 35. Liz Dykie shot eight strokes under her handicap to win the Ladies Low Net title this week, tying her career low score. Dale Praetorius and Helene Weathers tied for second-place honors with a net score of 35. In the Senior Division, Ron Bush took first-place honors with a net score of 35. There was a three-way tie for second place between John Petrycki, Joe Tripoli, and Judy McElderry, each finishing with a net score of 36.

Birdies were hard to come by this week. However, Joe Karwowski had two birdies for the round. Golfers with single birdies included JoAnn Bonanni, Chet Czerpak, Joe Dollymore, Pat Zimmerman and John Petrycki. Sixteen golfers shot in the forties this week, including Rich Hawthorne, Joe Karwowski, JoAnn Bonanni, Mark Franks, Mark Hemmert, Mary Hughes, Tom Bowman, Dave Carter, Liz Dykie, Walt Thompson, Ron Bush, Pat Zimmermann, Fred Marcell, John McVerry, Dale Praetorius, and Joe Tripoli. Closest to the pin honors went to Derek Rearden, whose shot was the only one to hit the green on hole No. 12.

Welcome back to returning players Fred Marcell, Jane Williams and Nancy Ryan. Arlene Gotschall’s son Bill also joined us for a round this week as a guest player.  Long time member Joe Dollymore reached a milestone birthday this week. Nearly everyone is now back from their winter locales, and the last few will be back shortly. This will bring us to full capacity for the remainder of the season.
