Fog shortens, postpones part of Cape May County Lifeguard Championships

WILDWOOD CREST – A dense fog delayed the start of the 2024 Cape May County Lifeguard Championships Monday evening at the Rambler Road beach and then ended up postponing it after three events.

The host Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol held a few of the events out of order, starting with the open surf dash and women’s surf dash. Those events take place closest to shore and thus were less affected by the fog. The WCBP also held the open paddleboard race, but as it got close to 8 p.m. with the fog getting worse, decided to postpone the remaining events until 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Events still to be held incude the singles and doubles rows, the swims and women’s paddleboard. Here are some of the Ocean City Beach Patrol competitors. Among the competitors for the OCBP were Frank Christy, in the open paddleboard race, the women’s surf dash squad including Morgan Decosta, Haley Clayton, Claudia Booth and Chloe Care and the men’s surf dash team of Nick Bell, Connor Brennan, Kevin O’Sullivan and Thatcher Hamill.

Still to compete are doubles rowing partners AJ Oves and Matt Oves, singles rower AJ Oves, Jake Texter in the open box swim, Summer Dewitt in the women’s swim and Haley Clayton in the women’s paddle board.
