FOCUS political group mostly endorses newcomers over sitting or former councilmen

OCEAN CITY – A recently formed political action committee announced its endorsements for Ocean City Council in the May 14 election.

Families of Ocean City United in Success (FOCUS) chose newcomer Paul Stryker in the Second Ward over longtime former councilman Keith Hartzell, who is running to get back on council.

It also endorsed newcomer Amie Vaules over incumbent Jody Levchuk, who is finishing his first term representing the Third Ward.

FOCUS endorsed incumbent David Winslow in the Fourth Ward instead of challenger Cecelia Gallelli-Keyes, a former school board member.

It also is backing political newcomer Sean Barnes over former councilman Michael DeVlieger for the at-large position.

The group endorsed Terry Crowley Jr., who is running unopposed in the First Ward.

In a press release sent to the media Monday afternoon, FOCUS said it reached out to all the candidates with questionnaires or interviews and appreciated their “willingness to serve the community.”

“The endorsed candidates demonstrate a commitment to serving Ocean City. They are free of personal and political agendas, and FOCUS determined that their words are best backed up by their record in private and public service,” the release stated.

“Each of these candidates represents the best of Ocean City and brings an approach to governing that recognizes the role of City Council,” FOCUS President Todd Eachus said in the release.

“In addition, they share an optimistic and forward-looking view of Ocean City and are prepared to tackle both the challenges and opportunities of the future on behalf of all residents and taxpayers.

“Now is a time to look forward, rather than to air past grievances,” he said.  “On behalf of the members of FOCUS, I would again like to thank all the candidates for their interest in serving.”
