Disagrees with closing beaches and boardwalk

Editor’s note: This was directed to Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian:

To the Editor:

Dear Mr. Mayor, I own a home on Fifth Street and I strongly disagree with your decision to close the Boardwalk and beach at this time. Now, more than ever, people need to spend some time outside for exercise and relaxation. If people can still walk on the streets then they should be allowed on the boardwalk and beach.

As far as social distancing is concerned, the city police ought to be able to enforce the social distancing rules like they do in the summer for no dogs on the Boardwalk and limiting when bikes need to also get off the Boardwalk.

Your message shows hostility to those who want to enjoy the amenities that the city has to offer. This is akin to throwing the baby out with the bath water!

Shouldn’t city council have a say in this draconian edict? Let the police do their job. Your decision is just pandering to year-round residents who vote versus all other property owners and guests who provide the majority of revenue to keep Ocean City still “America’s Greatest Family Resort.”

I urge you to reconsider your rash decision and reopen both the Boardwalk and beaches.
