In Cape May County’s final daily COVID-19 report Monday, the Department of Health said 50,505 residents have received at least one vaccine and 42,733 have been fully vaccinated, continuing to lead New Jersey on a per capita basis.

Officials also touted the county’s efforts to keep its coronavirus numbers down during the pandemic.

“It is amazing what everyone has done in Cape May County over the past year to keep our residents and visitors safe,” Cape May County Commissioner Vice-Director Len Desiderio, said last week. He was a co-chair of the county Recovery Task Force.

“The hard work of our Health Department, medical community, businesses, residents, and visitors has made Cape May County  the best for vaccinating its residents and lowest for new cases of COVID-19. We understand we can’t give up on either front now, but it is important to say thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to put us in the place we are today.”

On Monday the department said 56 percent of the adult population in the county is fully vaccinated and there were only 99 new cases of COVID-19 reported over the seven-day period between May 3 and 9.

The county dropped below 100 new cases in a seven-day period for the first time this year.

On Monday, there were four new cases reported – two in Lower Township, one in Middle Township and one in Ocean City.

Only three communities in the county have active COVID-19 cases in the double digits, led by Middle Township with 59, Lower Township with 26 and Wildwood with 23.

Four communities – Avalon, Cape May Point, Sea Isle City and West Wildwood had no active cases on Monday.

Ocean City and Upper Township each had eight, North Wildwood had four, West Cape May had three, Wildwood Crest and Woodbine had one each and Cape May and Stone Harbor had one case apiece.

There were four new cases announced Sunday; seven on Saturday; 17 on Friday, five of them in Middle Township; 20 on Thursday, including seven in Wildwood and five in Lower Township; 15 on Wednesday, including five in Lower and four in Middle; and 11 on Tuesday, May 4, including six in Wildwood.

There was one non-resident active case in Middle Township as of Monday and non active cases in long-term care facilities.

The death of an 87-year-old male from Middle Township, attributed to the coronavirus, was announced Monday.  There have been 105 deaths in Cape May County communities and 97 in long-term care.
