Show at Arts Center
OCEAN CITY – The Gallery at the Ocean City Arts Center features its “Annual Juried Photography Show” through April 30. A “Meet the Artists’ reception will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 12.
The gallery is in the Arts Center, second floor of the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave.
The theme of the show is “Glass.” Photographers were given the challenge to create something specific using glass as a theme. The theme was made to be as broad as possible and glass lends itself to many iterations. Prizes are awarded. This year’s judges are noted area photographers Jacqui Robinson, David Griffin and Frank Smith. The photographers whose works have been selected for the show have produced a myriad of exciting and beautiful interpretations.

Bernadette Peters to perform with
Pops; tickets on sale starting April 10
OCEAN CITY – Tickets for the season-opening Ocean City Pops concert featuring theater, television and film star Bernadette Peters will go on sale starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.
Peters will join the Pops at the Ocean City Music Pier to kick off the 2024 season at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30.
The award-winning actress and singer’s career spans film, television and stage. She won Tony Awards for her roles in the musicals “Annie Get Your Gun” and Song and Dance,” and she received five other nominations and an honorary award. Four of the cast albums on which she starred have won Grammy Awards. Peters starred in films, including “Silent Movie,” “The Jerk” and “Pennies From Heaven.” She and Lea Salonga will return to Broadway in 2025 to star in “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.”

UPPER TOWNSHIP – The Country Shore Women’s Club is hosting a bingo fundraiser where prizes are gift certificates to area restaurants. It is Saturday, April 13, at the Upper Township Community Center. Society bus trip
UPPER TOWNSHIP – This year’s spring bus trip sponsored by the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Twp. (HPSUT) will be Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28.
The trip first heads to the Stirling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg. From the 1830s until the 1960s, this area of New Jersey was one of the largest areas for the mining of zinc. The trip also will go to Historic Speedwell in Morristown, the Cooper Grist Mill in Chester and the Bouman Stickney House.
The trip leaves Acme parking lot in Cape May Court House at 8 a.m. with a stop in Oceanview at the Seaville Acme parking lot before heading to the museum. It will then go to Hackettstown for dinner and to the Quality Inn for the night with dinner at the Taphouse Grille.
Sunday will start with Historic Speedwell for a tour and the true story of Samuel B. Morse of Morse Code fame. Another short drive to the grist mill and lunch and then a stop at the Bouman Stickney site in Readington on the way home.

An interactive discussion on the biology of dementia and the importance of keeping brains sharp and healthy will be in Room 110 of the Ocean City Free Public Library. Michele Musto, volunteer coordinator at UMC The Shores, will be leading the discussion and Q&A. All are welcome.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Library is hosting its bi-annual three-day books sale Monday, April 15, through Wednesday, April 17.

AVALON — In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Cape May County Division of Aging & Disability Services will host the annual Senior Jamboree.
The theme for 2024 is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Avalon Community Center, 30th Street and the beach in Avalon.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce and Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce have scheduled a Liquor License Reform Seminar for May 1 at South 9 Bar & Grille in Cape May Court House.
The forum will provide stakeholders an opportunity to gain insights into the significant changes brought about by Gov. Phil Murphy’s historic legislation. The new laws promise to bring about substantial changes affecting various sectors, including restaurants, craft beverage manufacturers and the handling of inactive liquor licenses.
The seminar aims to address the different types of licenses, changes for craft producers, effects on inactive licenses, inter-municipality transfers and more.
Representatives from the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control will be present to deliver a comprehensive presentation on the liquor license reform policy. Additionally, a panel of speakers will engage in discussions, pose questions to the representatives and offer commentary based on their experiences and expertise. A brief Q&A will follow the program.

Golf tournament
set for April 28
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Cape May County’s 4-H Horse Council has scheduled its 20th 4-H Golf Tournament for Sunday, April 28, at Avalon Golf Club in Cape May Court House.
The entry fee of $145 per person/$560 per foursome includes greens fees, carts, registration gifts, door prizes, an Italian buffet dinner and homemade desserts made by 4-H youth.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
All proceeds go directly to 4-H horse project educational costs, youth participation in state and national 4-H leadership events and renovations to the 4-H horse show arena on the 4-H Fairgrounds.
To-date the tournament has contributed $22,000 to the CMC 4-H Memorial Scholarship Fund resulting in 34 college scholarships.

This ensemble will recreate a Paris bistro scene with jazz overtones, reminiscent of a magical bygone era.

help for seniors
OCEAN CITY — The Cape May County Division of Aging and Disability Services will offer free tax preparation assistance from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Ocean City Community Center, 1735 Simpson Ave. in Ocean City.
The service allows seniors to drop off documents for one of the county’s tax experts to prepare. The county will then contact the taxpayer to pick up completed returns.

Participants should provide documents including identification, income documents, any IRS letters, Social Security cards and information on medical, home, education and child care expenses.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from June 2024 high school graduates planning to pursue a college, university or trade school education.
Scholarship applications and deadlines can be found at capemaycountychamber.com/scholarships.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student from each high school in Cape May County based on the qualifying criteria.
Additionally, home-schooled students are encouraged to apply as well as county resident students who attend high school outside Cape May County and meet all other application criteria.
The Education Foundation provides scholarship opportunity to students in Cape May County who themselves, or whose parents or guardians, are employed by or own a business that is a member of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce.
Since its formation in 2015, the foundation has awarded more than $73,000 in scholarships.

class offered
OCEAN CITY — U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 is offering the Boat America one-day safe-boating course on multiple dates during 2024. Classes will be held at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church at Eighth Street and Central Avenue in Ocean City. The courses are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27, May 18, June 1 and June 15. The cost is $60.
State law requires all operators of power boats complete an approved boating-safety class to obtain a Boating Safety Certificate. The course will provide the knowledge necessary to obtain the certification without the need to study before the class and includes the proctored exam.
Course topics include an introduction to boating, boating law, vessel safety equipment, safe boating, navigation, mishaps and emergencies.

SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Business Association has announced that it will award $500 scholarships in spring 2024 in the name of Lou DeScioli to students who work at a business based in Somers Point.
The scholarship awards are inspired by DeScioli, a longtime business and community leader who always believed that a great business is one that strives to make its community better.
All high school seniors and current college students who work at a Somers Point business are eligible to be considered for an award. Applicants must submit an essay of about 500 words describing the impact they have had on the business at which they are employed. The essay should also provide three examples of how their efforts positively affected customer relations and improved business practices.

Crisis Intervention
Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).
FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.
FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

for depression
Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.
The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey.
