FRANKLINVILLE — Ocean City senior Nick Scarangelli and Mainland senior Mawali Osunniyi are state champions.
Competing at the NJSIAA Group III track and field state championship meet Saturday at Delsea High School in Franklinville, Osunniyi won the high jump by clearing 6’8”.
He also took silver in the triple jump by leaping 47’0.5” as sophomore teammate Josiah Williams won the bronze by going 45’4.75”.
Mattawan senior Branden Satterwhite won the event with his jump of 47’9”. Ocean City sophomore Hercules Stewart was eighth at 43’3”.
Williams also finished sixth in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 15.37 seconds. Teammate Andrew Ramos was 17th in 19.06. Winslow Township senior Javien Wall won in 14.82 seconds.
Scarangelli won the 3200 meters in a time of 9:20.89, about two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Sean Matthews, a senior from Wayne Valley, who finished in 9:22.85.
Ocean City teammate Matt Hoffman, a junior, was ninth in the 3200 in 9:41.86.
“It was a very exciting race,” Red Raider head coach Matt Purdue said on Monday. “Nick executed a race plan well and positioned himself in the front pack early and made a decisive move to the front in the second mile.
“Nick worked hard over the past year training to get to the state meet and we know he can compete on Wednesday in the Meet of Champions against the best runners in New Jersey.”
Scarangelli finished ninth in the 1600 meters in 4:26.41 and Hoffman was 17th in 4:36.86. Micah Lawson, a Rahway senior, won in 4:17.23.
Mainland’s William Murray took bronze in the long jump by sailing 21’9”. Mendham senior Brian Walsh won with his jump of 22’6.5”.
Ocean City’s Colin Dice, a senior, was eighth in the discus with his throw of 141’1”. Delsea senior Luke Maxwell won with a throw of 166’6”.
Red Raider teammate Nick Layton, a junior, was eighth in the javelin with a distance of 153’3”. Randolph senior Ryan Mohr won with his throw of 176’11”.
Mainland junior Leo Pierre was ninth in the 100 meter dash finals with a time of 11.05 seconds. Ewing senior Mekhi Stafford won in 10.62 seconds.
Pierre also finished 15th in the 200 meters in 22.7 seconds. Hamilton senior Jaci Summers won in 21.38 seconds.
Mainland senior Wiliam Spollen was 10th in the 400 meter hurdles. He finished in a time of 57.65 seconds. Deptford’s Brown won in 52.72 seconds.
Ocean City junior Luke Halbruner was 11th in the 400 meters in 51.35 seconds. Deptford senior Lathan Brown won in 48.8 seconds.
