Ocean City Police sergeant indicted on sexual assault charge

Tyrone Rolls of Marmora allegedly had sexual relationship with juvenile victims

OCEAN CITY – Ocean City Police Department Sgt. Tyrone Rolls, currently on suspension, was indicted Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 17, by a Cape May County Grand Jury on multiple counts including aggravated sexual assault, a first-degree crime.

Rolls, 51, of Marmora, was indicted on one count of aggravated sexual assault; two separate counts of official misconduct, crimes of the second degree; one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a crime of the second degree; and one count of aggravated assault of a domestic violence victim, a crime of the third degree, according to Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland.

The charges in the indictment were a result of an investigation conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit after it was alleged Rolls had a sexual relationship with a juvenile victim.

Rolls was arrested on April 7 on multiple counts.

The prosecutor noted at the time the charges “are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless he is proven guilty.”

Suthernland said a person convicted of a first-degree crime is subject to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey state prison. Those convicted of a second-degree crime can be imprisone for five to 10 years and for third-degree crimes, three to five years.

Sutherland said it is an ongoing investigation and urges anyone with additional information relating to the investigation to call the Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 465-1135, or report it anonymously through the Cape May County Sheriff’s Tip Line at cmcsheriff.net and click on anonymous tip, or through the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at (609) 889-3597.
