Red Raiders, Mustangs both contending with Eagles field hockey

The Ocean City field hockey team opened the season with a 10-0 blowout over Vineland and then beat out-of-conference opponent Shore Regional 1-0 Saturday.

The Mainland Mustang girls lose their opener to Egg Harbor Township, 5-0, then rebounded with a 7-0 win over Vineland.

Against Vineland, Ocean City scored 7 goals in the first period, led by a hat trick by Carly Hannin, two each by Tricia Nicoletti and Julia Neff and one each by Nicole Carey, Racheli Levy-Smith and Sam Seligsohn.

Levy Smith had 3 assists and Carey and Neff had 2 each.

Goalie Taryn Dolka made 3 saves for the Red Raiders and Vineland’s Morgan Harrell-Alvarez had 19 saves.

Against Shore, it was a scoreless stalemate through all four quarters of regulation.

In overtime, Camryn Flynn had the golden goal for the victory.

Dolka made 7 saves and Shore’s Kayla O’Scanlon had 10 saves.

Ocean City was at Atlantic City Tuesday and hosts Egg Harbor Township (3-0) at 4 p.m. Friday on the turf at Carey Stadium.

Mustang girls

EHT is now riding a three-game win streak. Kara Wilson and Julia Zapille each scored twice for the Eagles and Addison Jacobs added the fifth goal.

Mainland goalie Farley O’Brien made 11 saves in the game and Eagle Rebecca Macchia had 3 saves.

Against Vineland, Mustang Julianna Medina had the hat trick, scoring one in the first quarter and two more in the third quarter. Isabella Guzman had a pair of goals, a solo in the first quarter and one early in the third quarter assisted by Medina. In the fourth quarter, Mia Patroni scored, assisted by Jorja Condurso, and Sandi Smoger netted a goal with 1:25 left in the game on an assist by Eva Blanco.

O’Brien made 4 saves to preserve the shutout.

Vineland’s Morgan Harrell-Alvarez turned away 26 shots.

The Mustangs were at Bridgeton Monday and Millville Tuesday. They are home against Atlantic City at 4 p.m. Friday.
