By DAVID NAHAN/Sentinel staff

Last week Atlantic County pushed past 30,000 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and Cape May County’s numbers continued to climb, with three new deaths attributed to the coronavirus.

As of Monday, Aug. 30, Atlantic County reported 30,037 cases to date after 50 new cases Monday – split between 25 males ages 1 to 78 and 25 females ages 6 to 83 – pushed it over the threshold. There were three deaths in Atlantic County between Aug. 23 and 30, and a total of 500 new cases spread throughout the county with the youngest reported victim 8 months old.

In Cape May County, on the weekly report from Thursday, Aug. 26, there were three COVID-related deaths, a 65-year-old man from Upper Township, a 61-year-old from Lower Township and a 92-year-old from Middle Township.

There were 579 active cases in communities as of Aug. 27, with 147 in Middle Township, 112 in Lower Township, 71 in Upper Township, 67 in Wildwood, 32 in North Wildwood, 30 in Ocean City, and 16 in Sea Isle City. Cape May City reported 14 (and three more among non-residents) and West Cape May had six. Other cases included 25 in Woodbine, 23 in Wildwood Crest, six in Avalon, three in Stone Harbor and one in West Wildwood. There were no active cases in Cape May Point.

There were nine active cases in long-term care facilities, including five in Middle Township, two in Lower Township and one each in Dennis Township and Woodbine.

There have been 117 fatalities in Cape May County communities since the pandemic began in March 2020 and another 99 in long-term care facilities.

Cape May County has had a total of 10,316 cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began and 216 deaths. Atlantic County has reported 683 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Because Cape May County has roughly a third of the population of Atlantic County, the numbers, per capita, are roughly equivalent.
