SOCIA fears end of group

OCEAN CITY – The Board of Directors of the South Ocean City Improvement Association (SOCIA) has begun discussions concerning the potential dissolution of the organization.

SOCIA has had a long history here in Ocean City.  Founded over 100 years ago, SOCIA, through the generosity and participation of its members and volunteers, has been responsible for both instituting and supporting numerous civic and social activities in the south end of Ocean City.

Included among these events over past years were a speakers groups (addressing topics such as identity theft, police and fire safety, and will preparation), beach concerts, various fund raising and food collection drives, efforts in support or improved beach access for the handicapped, garden beautification activities, and numerous holiday events, including the Fourth of July Bike Parade.

Membership has waned over the last two decades to the extent that SOCIA now has less than 75 contributing members.  At its peak, there once were in excess of 350 members.  Finding volunteers to assist in running the organization remains a challenge.

Comments about the potential closure of SOCIA are solicited and can be sent to John Fallon, President, at johnastro@comcast.net and should arrive prior to July 30.  In particular, those who see themselves as a leader for SOCIA’s second century, respond now.  The group is looking for a full management team.
