Major General William Matz, Jr.

Major General William Matz, Jr. went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2026.

Bill was born and raised in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, and spent more than 80 summers in the place he loved, Ocean City, New Jersey. He graduated from Lansdowne High School and Gettysburg College and earned his master’s degree from the University of San Diego.

Bill’s military career as an infantry officer spanned 33 years and included service in Vietnam and during the invasion of Panama. Among his many military decorations were the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart.

Following his military career, Bill continued his service to our country in the civilian sector. He served as Vice President of Army Programs for Raytheon and as Program Manager for Vinnell in Saudi Arabia. He later devoted himself to advocating for America’s military community as President of the National Association for Uniformed Services, where he worked with Congress on behalf of military personnel, retirees, and their families.

President Trump appointed Bill as Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission, where he oversaw the care and preservation of military cemeteries and monuments throughout the world.

Bill’s life was also marked by his lifelong battle with polio, which left him paralyzed as a child. Despite this challenge, he never allowed it to diminish his determination or his devotion to others. He was a tireless advocate for the United States of America and for those who served it.

Throughout his remarkable life, Bill was supported by his beloved wife of 60 years, Linda, and by his family. His dedication to his country, his love of family, and his commitment to serving others will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Interment will be October 28, 2026, at Arlington National Cemetery (His full obituary may be found at fullernaples.com)
