Oyster Festival

Oct. 18 in Bivalve

PORT NORRIS — The Bayshore Center at Bivalve has scheduled the 4th annual New Jersey Oyster Festival for noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 18, inviting oyster lovers to enjoy fresh local shellfish while celebrating the history and culture of oystering in New Jersey.

Ticketed entry to the event includes unlimited freshly shucked local oysters on the half-shell, education speakers with updates on the industry, live music and a commemorative event glass. All proceeds support the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, the non-profit that oversees New Jersey’s tall ship A.J. Meerwald, the Delaware Bay Museum and the historic shipping sheds.

Tickets are $60 the day of the event, which is held rain or shine.

Fall fundraiser

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Arts Center is have a fall Reception Fundraiser 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Adelene’s in the Port-O-Call Hotel, 15th Street and Boardwalk, Ocean City.

In a tribute to an old boardwalk tradition, there will be sketch artists offering live portrait sketches. Artists Tim Smith and Tony Troy, with their own distinct styles, will do sketches for an additional $20 fee.

Medicare topic at

AARP meeting

OCEAN CITY – The Medicare Open Enrollment Period is Oct. 15 to Dec. 75. At 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, AARP Ocean City Chapter 1062 will host John Billetdoux, founder of JBA Insurance Brokers, a Medicare broker who recognizes that choosing a Medicare plan is one of the most important decisions to make.

He will speak to the various plans, the differences between Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage, what it takes to change a plan, as well as the significant changes in 2026, including premium increases, formulary changes, etc. 

The meeting is in room 110, Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave.

AARP volunteers will be collecting the annual $5 dues. If not a member, see one of the volunteers to join.

Shore Physicians

has a flu clinic

SOMERS POINT – Shore Physicians Group (SPG) is offering a convenient drive-through flu vaccine clinic – 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at SPG’s Northfield office at 2605 Shore Road. 

Flu vaccines will be available for adults age 18 and older, with specific vaccines for patients 65+. Individuals at high risk are encouraged to discuss flu vaccination with their primary care provider before attending. 

Although pharmacies began offering flu shots as early as August, the CDC recommends vaccination in September and October for the best protection throughout flu season.

SPG patients can schedule their appointments by calling (609) 365-6200. Each appointment is scheduled in five-minute blocks to keep the process fast and convenient. 

This year’s clinics are for the flu vaccine only. COVID-19 boosters or combination flu/COVID vaccines are not available at these events; patients seeking those options should contact their local pharmacy.

Halloween parade

Oct. 17 in Sea Isle

SEA ISLE CITY — The Recreation Department has scheduled its annual Halloween Parade and Family Dance Party for Oct. 17.

The parade is set to begin at 7 p.m. from 45th to 40th streets on Landis Avenue, featuring decorative floats, live music and a variety of costumed participants. 

Immediately after the parade, families are welcome to attend the Halloween Dance Party at Excursion Park, where a DJ will play music and awards will be presented to the parade’s top entries.

Harvest Classic

Oct. 18 in Sea Isle

SEA ISLE CITY — The Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its annual Harvest Classic for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at Excursion Park, where there will be plenty of seasonal fun for the whole family. 

In addition to pumpkin painting, live music and other activities, the Harvest Classic will feature merchandise vendors, a Pie Baking Contest and hayrides on the beach (beach conditions permitting).

UPPER TOWNSHIP – The Upper Township Arts Team will meet via Zoom at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16.

Shore auxiliary

craft show Nov. 1

TUCKAHOE — The Shore Medical Center Auxiliary has scheduled a day of shopping and seasonal fun during its annual Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Upper Township Community Center, 1790 Route 50 in Tuckahoe.

The event will feature a wide variety of handcrafted goods from local artisans and makers, including home décor, jewelry, holiday items and accessories.

Attendees also can enjoy refreshments and raffle opportunities throughout the day. Proceeds support the Shore Medical Center Auxiliary, which raises funds to enhance patient care and support programs at Shore Medical Center.

Trunk or Treat

Oct. 25 in Point

SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Police Department has scheduled its annual Trunk or Treat event for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the corner of Harbor Lane and Bay Avenue.

Parking is available in the lot for this free community policing event.

Family-friendly costumes are encouraged. Dogs are prohibited.

The police department will be accepting toys to help kick-start the holiday toy drive, but toy donations are not a requirement to attend Trunk or Treat.

LINWOOD – The 14th annual Frank Lang Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 20, at the Linwood Country Club. Registration is at 11:30 a.m.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Family and Community Health Sciences program has scheduled the virtual Lunch & Learn Series program “Getting Ready for Healthy Holidays” for 12:30 to 1 p.m. Nov. 13.

Presenter Anneliese Kuemmerle, Program Associate II, will provide budget-friendly tips for stocking up on pantry staples, recipe swaps to make holiday meals healthier and information on making a healthy holiday plate.

Farmers meeting

WEST CAPE MAY — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County has scheduled an October Twilight Meeting for southern New Jersey farmers from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at Rea’s Farm Market, 400 Stevens St. in West Cape May.

Expert speakers from Rutgers University will come together in Cape May County to provide farmers with information on how to drive sales, identify viruses, advances in the blueberry crop and more.

Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station faculty and staff assist commercial farms with information, field research and consultation on various issues related to agriculture, the environment, natural resources management and integrated pest management.

In addition to the speakers, pesticide recertification credits will be awarded for: 1A (2 units), 3A (1 unit), 10 (3 units) and PP2 (3 units).

Group: ‘Abundance’

Scarecrow contest

SOMERS POINT — The Somers Point Police Department, Somers Point PAL and We Walk Somers Point will be hosting their second annual Scarecrow Contest from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9.

The groups encourage residents to walk along the bike path and cast their votes for their favorite display. The winner will be announced at noon and will receive a four-pack of tickets to Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township.

The free event begins in front of City Hall at 1 W. New Jersey Ave.

NORTHFIELD – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Shore Medical Center and Advanced Shore Imaging Associates are partnering to make lifesaving screenings more accessible. Together, they will offer free screening mammograms 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Advanced Shore Imaging Associates, 2605 Shore Road, Northfield. Appointments are required.

This event is primarily for women who are uninsured or underinsured, but is open to any woman who is eligible for a screening mammogram, including women age 40 and older, and women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer who are due for screening

A prescription or imaging order from a physician is required. Women who do not have a prescription can receive one by scheduling a free clinical breast exam the week prior to the event. Appointments for both the screening and clinical breast exam can be made by calling (609) 653-3440.

SEA ISLE CITY — The Cape May County Library System Children’s Department presents Jumpin’ Jamie, a “kindie rock” artist who makes music for children.

Jamie has played hundreds of shows from birthday parties to stadiums and everything in between, performing at comics conventions, corporate events and even for celebrities such as Idina Menzel and Alicia Keys.

Their debut album “Kookie” kicked off the “kindie rock” era, followed by his two albums “Never Mind the Blocks, Here’s Jumpin’ Jamie” and “Mosaic.”

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Board of Commissioners is sponsoring fall and winter events at the Cape May County Park and Zoo that are free and open to the public.

Halloween fun returns Oct. 25 with Boo at the Zoo, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a full day of festivities for all ages. Guests are encouraged to wear costumes and enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including children’s games, a craft station, candy giveaways, live entertainment, animal encounters and an inflatable obstacle course.

A highlight of the day is the Halloween Costume Contest. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the contest at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded following the contest.

At 12:30 p.m. is a lively musical performance by a “Hocus Pocus”-inspired witch trio on the center stage. Throughout the event, Master DJ & Sound will keep the energy high with a mix of Halloween-themed music.

Be on the lookout when the Pirates and Princesses take over the Zoo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8.

Visitors of all ages are invited to wear their best dress-up apparel to the event, which includes activities for children, a craft station, games, entertainment, an inflatable pirate ship and animals.  Coronation ceremonies and Disney Trivia will be held by popular princesses along with lots of pirate fun.

Start the holiday season with Santa’s Tree Lighting Celebration from 2 to 6 pm. Nov. 29.

Join the holiday festivities with Santa’s village shopping, live music and carolers, an ice sculpture carving and lots of free, family-friendly entertainment. Santa arrives at 5 p.m. for photos.

Soroptimist International of Cape May County is seeking applicants for its 2025-26 “Live Your Dream” Education and Training Awards for Women.  

This year there are three awards being offered; two for $2,000 and one for $2,500. 

The awards are presented to county women who provide primary financial support to their dependents (children and family) and who are enrolled or accepted in a vocational/skills training or undergraduate degree program. Recipients are able to use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education such as books, child care and transportation.

Monthly Grief

Support Group

OCEAN CITY – St. John Lutheran Church, Journey Hospice, and The Shores – a United Methodist Communities (UMC) Community – are partnering to offer a monthly Grief Support Group for adults who are navigating the difficult journey of loss.

The group provides a safe, welcoming and confidential space where individuals can come together to share their experiences, listen, and support one another. Whether someone has recently experienced a loss or is still processing grief from years past, all are welcome.

Meetings will be held in person on the second Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to noon at St. John Lutheran Church, 1001 Central Ave.

“Grief is a deeply personal experience, but it doesn’t have to be experienced alone,” group coordinators Beth Gebhart and Michele Musto said. “This group is about honoring each person’s journey and finding hope in shared understanding.”

The group is free and open to all adults, regardless of background or faith.

Anxiety Group   

ATLANTIC CITY – This weekly in-person support group is offered to individuals seeking coping strategies, mutual support, self-care, wellness, and recovery.  

Meetings are led by peers who have lived experience with anxiety and/or depression. The group meets 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at at the Atlantic Community Wellness Center, 1125 Atlantic Ave., Suite 617, Atlantic City. Offered by The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County. GALLOWAY – The Atlantic Community Wellness Center provides a weekly 15-to-20-minute meditation, follow-up discussion, and light stretch at 11:30 a.m. Mondays.

Coffee Talk

ATLANTIC CITY – The Atlantic Community Wellness Centers hosts a weekly gratitude-themed group at 11 a.m. Saturdays.  Called “Coffee Talk,” the group is a one-hour meeting during which participants discuss, enhance, and deepen their practice of gratitude, which is shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase optimism.

Too Much Stuff

Atlantic City – Twice monthly, a group is offered to individuals who live with clutter challenges and “too much stuff.” Strategies, education, support, goal-setting, and other related topics will be covered. 

There is no cost to participants. Meetings are at noon the first and third Saturdays of each month at the Atlantic Wellness Center, 1125 Atlantic Ave., Suite 617, Atlantic City.  Offered by The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County. Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous of Central Jersey invites people who have problems with food to join them for its 12-step recovery program. There are in-person meetings in Ocean County and Zoom meetings as well.

Call for free Family

Crisis Intervention

Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).

FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.

FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

Free screening

for depression 

Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.

The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey. 

Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
