Janice M. (Finsel) Engle, 78, passed away peacefully in Ocean View, New Jersey, after a six-year journey with Alzheimer’s disease on September 2, 2025. Up until the end, Janice maintained her kindness, grace and beautiful smile with her family and friends.
Born in Sea Isle City, New Jersey on July 21, 1947, Janice was raised in Ocean City, New Jersey, where she attended Saint Augustine’s Catholic School, then graduated high school at Ocean City High School in 1965, along with her twin sister, Joanne (Finsel) Rice. In 1980, Janice joined the family business, Stubbs’ Dress Shoppe in Ocean City, which was founded by her grandmother, Bertha Stubbs during the Great Depression. She continued the tradition of providing kindness and quality service to the customers with her sisters, Joanne (Finsel) Rice and Patricia (Finsel) Schmidt, cousin, Ruthann (Rosica) Firmani, mother, Margaret (Peg)(Stubbs) Finsel and mother’s sister, Helen (Stubbs) Rosica.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Bruce Engle. Her daughter, Juliette Cole (Lawrence Jr.). Her grandchildren, Lawrence C. Cole III (Charlie) and Chase Cole. Her twin sister, Joanne Rice (Chuck) and great niece, Cheri Cottelli (Brian) and son, Brian. Her cousins Thomas Rosica (Susan) and Ruthann (Rosica) Firmani (Joe decd.) and her children and grandchildren.
Janice was preceded in death by her sister Patricia (Finsel) Schmidt and husband, Tom Schmidt Sr. and niece, Dawn Schmidt and great niece, Melissa Klipp. She is survived by her niece Deborah (Schmidt) Klipp (Doug) and great niece Samantha (Klipp) Beidler (Chase) and grandson Brody. Nephew Thomas Schmidt Jr. (Megan) and children, Alexia, Keira and Triston and stepchildren Kaylie and Addison.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 10th at 11 o’clock from The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ with a visitation from 9:30 am until the time of service. Burial will follow in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ.
