Carson grew up in the Kensington area of Philadelphia, graduating from Northeast High School in 1943, followed by service in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge from military service in 1945, he completed an engineering degree in 1950 at the Drexel University. Following his education, he worked for several engineering firms before establishing multiple independent electrical manufacturing sales companies until retiring in his seventies. He was an active member of the Haddonfield, Ocean City and Naples communities. His lifelong passion for boating led him to become involved in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also an avid bowler, competing in various leagues, the Haddonfield 65 Club, and contributed to the church community as a Deacon. Most evenings he would be found watching the sunset, marveling at the way the world keeps on spinning, an engineer until the end.
