There were ideal conditions for play at Brambley Golf League

By THE HANDICAPPER IV

OCEAN CITY – Clear skies and moderate temperatures were the order of the day providing an almost perfect backdrop to play golf at the Ocean City Golf Course last week.

The golfers were led by John McVerry, who shot a season-best 41 to capture the Overall Low Gross title for the week. John’s round was the hallmark of consistency with 8 pars and only 4 bogies. Joe Karwowski had a mercurial round but fell just 1 shot short of John, finishing at 42. Joe had 3 birdies and almost caught playing partner McVerry on the last hole but in the end, it was consistency that prevailed.

However, the day may have belonged to Pat Zimmerman, who recorded a personal best 46 to win the Flight B Low Gross. Pat garnered 2 birdies for his score and also capped the day by winning closest to the pin on finishing hole No. 12. His shot landed just 3’8” from the cup.  Jim McElderry also shined winning the Senior Division Low Gross with an outstanding round of 44 and Mary Hughes again led the Ladies Division with a Low Gross of 46.

In the always competitive Low Net competitions, Frank Coppenbarger, Joe Karwowski and Chet Czerpak tied for first place at a final score of 34, 3 under their averages. There was also three-way tie for third place at 36 between Mark Hemmert, Mike Toscano and Tom Bowman. In the B Flight, Mike Bravoco won first place at 32, followed in second place by Jeff Mitchell with a 34  and Roy Taylor and Bruce Johns finished third at 36. The Ladies Low Net winner was Dawn Bobay at 35 demonstrating her solid play and consistency. She was followed by Helene Weathers, who with Dale Praetorius both finished with a low net of 37. The Senior Division nod went to Derek Rearden and Ron Bush for first place and Joe Tripoli edged out Jean Bush to win third place with a 33. There were 10n birdies with Joe Karwowski and Pat Zimmerman accounting for half of them. Single birdies went to Derek Rearden, Mark Hemmert, Will Evans, Dave Carter and Jeff Mitchell. Those shooting in the 40s included John McVerry, Joe Karwowski, Jim McElderry, Chet Czerpak, Dave Carter, Tom Bowman, Mark Hemmert, Mary Hughes, Pat Zimmerman, Frank Coppenbarger, Ron Bush, Mike Toscano, Carmine Bonnani, Joe Tripoli, Jean Bush, Jeff Mitchell Derek Rearden, Dawn Bobay and Fred Marcell.

The Brambley Golf League continues to move forward with 48 golfers participating this week. Charlie Smith joined us again as a perspective member and Gavin O’Connell, grandson of Elaine and Derek Rearden, was also a guest player.  Nice to see Roy Taylor back with us as well.
