OCEAN CITY – While a slew of games for multiple teams were canceled because of rain, the Ocean City High School softball team had a big week, winning four games in a row to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Raiders used a three home-run performance to beat Holy Spirit 13-3 on Wednesday, April 10.
Jessica Mooney, Carlee Hiddeman and Annabelle Shumski all slammed home runs. Mooney, who also had a double, was credited with 4 RBI and Shumski with 3. Hiddeman also had a double and 2 RBI.
Carly Hennis had a 2-RBI double.
Taylor Vaugh had two singles and Brooke Douglas, Sydney Catto and Kiley McCorristin each singled.
Mooney and Douglas split time on the mound. In four innings, Mooney allowed 5 hits and 2 runs. Douglas allowed 1 run on two hits in two innings of work.
A day earlier, the Raider girls beat Wildwood Catholic 15-0. Douglas and Mooney again split time on the mound.
It was Douglas’s turn to get her bat working. She had a home run and two singles to plate 4 RBI.
McCorristin had two singles and Shumski and Vaugh had one each.
The girls won their third game in a row Thursday, improving their record to 4-2, beating Our Lady of Mercy Academy 4-1 powered by a big fifth inning.
The girls scored a run in the second, but OLMA tied it in the fourth with a run of its own. The Raider girls scored three runs in the fifth.
Mooney had a double and a single and Douglas, Hennis and Vaugh each singled in the game. Vaugh had 3 RBI. Hennis, Catto, Hiddeman and Shumski each scored a run.
Mooney pitched four innings, allowing 2 hits and one run. Douglas pitched three innings, allowing no hits. Mooney struck out eight and Douglas struck out six OLMA batters.
On Saturday against Holy Cross Prep, Shumski hit three singles and Mooney had a pair of singles and a home run as the Raiders won 7-0.
Hennis also had two singles and Lyla Ginzberg, Hiddeman and McCorristin had one single each.
Mooney, Ginsburg and McCorrstin had 2 RBI each and Shumski had one.
Mooney pitched the first four innings allowing no hits. Douglas pitched the last three innings and allowed two hits.
Mainland softball
The Mustang girls went 1-1 last week, falling to Middle Township 3-0, but beating Millville 4-2.
Bella D’Agostino picked up the win on the mound and Denver Obermeyer was the hero at the plate, hitting two home runs and a single that accounted for all four of Mainland’s runs. Bella Barretta and Carly Cavacini each had singles.
Raider tennis wins 2
The Ocean City High School boys tennis team shut out Cedar Creek 5-0 on April 10.
Charles DiCicco topped Daniel Perez 6-0, 6-2 at first singles; Tracy Steingard beat Owen Nowalsky 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and Jackson Barnes beat Justin Polk 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.
Chase Bowman and Colin Bowman won 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles against Pirates Finnegan Watson and Wynn Simpson. At second doubles, it was Luke Wagner and Joey Goodman over Josiah Morales and Seth Glonek 6-2, 6-1.
Ocean City topped Vineland 4-1 on April 9.
DiCicco beat Rohan Pastel 6-0, 6-0, and Steingard topped Justin Mistral 6-1, 6-2 at first and second singles, respectively. Vineland’s Christopher DeCarvalho Chanez beat Ocean City’s Charlie Hudak 7-5, 6-1.
Chase Bowman and Colin Bowman won at first doubles, beating Marco Baruffi and Arshveer Sehgal 6-2, 6-4, and Wagner and Goodman beat Vineland’s Mann Patel and George Cardona 6-3, 6-0 at second doubles.
OCHS, MRHS baseball
teams each win twice
Ocean City won its delayed season opener in a close contest over Mainland, then the subsequent makeup game was rained out. Since then, Ocean City won a pair of games and MRHS three.
The Raiders beat Buena 17-0 and 20-1. Matt Pashley had a game highlight with a 3-RBI home run and teammate Colin Thompson matched the RBI total with a pair of singles in the first contest. Evan Taylor and Travis Large each had two singles as well. In the second game against Buena, Kameron Street had a homer and a single, bringing in a total of 5 runs. Pashley had three singles and Evan Taylor had a double and triple in that win.
Mainland bounced right back from its loss to win three straight, two over Vineland, 7-3 and 11-4, and the third over Egg Harbor Township, 9-5. Ethan Mitnick had a triple against EHT.
Against Vineland, Brady Blum, Mitnick and Chase Camas each had a double and single and Jake Blum and Cohen Cook had two singles each. Mitnick also had a big bat in the first game against Vineland with a double and triple. Camac, Luca Bruno and Brady Arena each had two singles.
