Special event planned for Upper Township community to bid smokestack adieu

BEESLEYS POINT — The Beesley’s Point Development Group (BPDG) will be hosting a “Say Goodbye to the Stack” event Oct. 21 to bid farewell to the infamous smokestack at the former B.L. England Generating Station before its demolition Oct. 26.

According to the BPDG, the purpose of the event, schedule for 10 a.m. to noon, is to reflect on the site’s history, point out some unique areas of the property and “decorate” the stack with the artistic talents of Upper Township and Cape May County.

“Please come prepared with large markers or spray paint to make your mark before the Oct. 26 implosion event. Want to take a selfie with the stack? Have at it,” the BPDG stated in a news release announcing the event. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

Various speakers are planned, but anyone who has a story to share about the former plant is welcome to speak.

According to the release, time will be devoted to Upper Township’s children and how BPDG intends to integrate site redevelopment into the advancement of arts, science, outdoor activities, sports and nature-based exploration, learning and creativity.

“The biodiversity of the site offers for exceptional learning, environment and the ability to immerse our children in the sciences. Several programs are being planned that will elevate the learning experience at all grade levels,” the release states.  

The event also will serve as a fundraiser for two local organizations; Upper Township Middle School and the Heritage Homestead Day Program.  

The goal is to raise money to purchase a potter’s wheel and kiln for the middle school, which would then donate the projects students made to Heritage Homestead.  

“Will the first piece of art off the kiln be a replica smokestack? We certainly hope so,” the BPDG stated. “Donations will be accepted at the event and very much appreciated, although they are not required for entrance.”

The group acknowledges the extreme interest in what’s next for the site. 

“While we look forward to conversation, ideas and input from the community, the event will be focused on the significant transformation of the site as well as saying goodbye to a community landmark,” the BPDG stated.

Participants should enter the property on Clay Avenue and park in the lot near the former plant. Overflow parking will be on North Shore Road.
