Slow down, be aware

When the summer tourist season arrives like a vengeance, it is time to slow down and to be aware.

That’s a message for both locals and visitors alike.

Memorial Day weekend was a preview of summer as the parking spaces filled up, the downtown and boardwalk were packed and bikes and pedestrians seemed to appear on every street and at each intersection.

Like everyone else, we want a safe season so it makes sense for drivers to be hyper aware of pedestrians and bicycle riders. Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks and motorists have to stop for them, but because of the way cars are parked so close to intersections, it isn’t always easy to see people waiting to cross the street or already off the curb. It takes special vigiliance for drivers as they approach intersections to expect there may be people crossing or waiting to cross. Pedestrians need to take care and not rush out into the streets without looking. Having the right of way doesn’t make a difference to physics – big heavy moving object is going to win in a collision.

We advise pedestrians to use caution before crossing and make sure vehicles are slowing and stopping for them.

Bicycle riders need to remember they must follow the rules of the road: stop at stoplights and stop signs and ride with traffic, single file, so cars can pass on narrow streets. Most riders use caution, but there are others who act like stoplights and stop signs are suggestions. Obey the laws and arrive safely at your destination.

For everyone, relax.

The whole point of being in shore towns and being on vacation is to take it easy. There isn’t a need to hurry. Don’t worry about those few extra seconds or minutes rushing around. Slow down and make the most of the summer safely.
