Richard Somers

ceremony Sept. 4

SOMERS POINT – There will be a ceremony to remember Richard Somers, born in 1778 in Somers Point and died Sept. 4, 1804 in Tripoli.

The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the park by the Somers mural and statue next to the Atlantic County Library branch, 801 Shore Road, Somers Point. Admission to the ceremony is free.

A 5 p.m. fundraiser will follow at Josie Kelly’s, 908 Shore Road, Somers Point. Cost is $40 per person for the cash bar and “lite bites.”

Vintage Jazz Band

Performs Sept. 8

SOMERS POINT – The six-piece Vintage Jazz Band performs its “From Ragtime to Swingtime” concert at the Somers Point Senior Center, 22-98 North Ambler Road, Somers Point, 2 to 3 p.m.Sunday, Sept. 8. Admission is free.

This is a musical tour of American popular song from 1910 to 1940. Band instruments include guitars, banjos, clarinet, alto sax, upright bass and drums, as well as a female vocalist.  Seating is limited and available on a first-come basis. Medicine luncheon

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Volunteers in Medicine annual luncheon will be at noon Sunday, Sept. 8, at Avalon Golf Club, 1510 Route 9 North, Cape May Court House.

The luncheon will honored Mary Ann Haflin, MD, as physician of th year, and Kathy Miller, RN, as volunteer of the year and the CMC Department of health as community partner.

SJ HPSUT topic Sept. 10

OCEAN VIEW – The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township membership meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, will feature a program about “Beekeeping in South Jersey” with a presentation by Fred Steinman, master beekeeper and president of the Jersey Cape Beekeepers Association.

Lecture Series

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Historical Museum Summer Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 12.

The lecture are held in the lecture hall of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. Admission is free and an ASL interpreter will sign each presentation.  The schedule, topic and speakers are: Sept. 5, History of the Boardwalk, Mary Stewart; and Sept. 12, “Shore Chronicles: Tales from the Jersey Shore,: Margaret Bucholz, author.”

Playmates in concert at Grace Lutheran

SOMERS POINT – The Playmates featuring Scott Breiner and Pamela Whitman will be performing at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, Grace Lutheran Church, Shore Road, Somers Point.

The concert is part of the church’s 100th anniversary year celebration and is open free to the public. A free will offering will be taken to benefit local humane societies.  A reception will follow the concert.

Craft Show

and Bake Sale

OCEAN CITY – St. John Lutheran Church will hold its third annual Craft Show & Bake Sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.

The inside show, featuring 25 vendors, will take place in Fellowship Hall and Lounge of the church at 1001 Central Ave., Ocean City. 

The sale will feature crafts made by local artisans and will include a bake sale with homemade baked goods made by church members. A book sale table will also be provided by the church with popular titles sold for reasonable prices. 

No fee will be charged for entry. The church requests (but does not require) a donation from attendees of a non-perishable item for the community food bank.

ATLANTIC CITY — A new fundraiser featuring a drag show and gourmet buffet will benefit Cancer Support Community New Jersey (CSCNJ).

Queen Cabaret is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at Nola’s inside Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. The cost is $75 for general admission and $100 for VIP seating. The cost includes a gourmet buffet and open bar. There also will be a raffle and 50/50 drawing. 

The drag show will be performed by Brittany Lynn and the Philly Drag Mafia.

NAMI Family

It is time to register for NAMI Family to Family eight-week educational program for family, friends, and significant others of adults with mental health conditions. 

NAMI Family to Family provides information about anxiety, depressive disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other mental health conditions. Topics covered include communication, problem solving, treatment, resources and recovery. The course is designed to increase the understanding and advocacy skills while helping participants maintain their own well-being. NAMI Atlantic Cape May offers this program free of charge to participants, beginning Tuesdays Sept. 3 through Oct. 22 from 6:30-9 p.m. via Zoom. CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) Program will hold the virtual Lunch & Learn Program: The 8 Dimensions of Wellness-Social Wellness from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.

“There are 8 Dimensions of Wellness defined by SAMSHA and this program will focus on the importance of social wellness for better life-balance and stress reduction,” said Chris Zellers, CHS educator/assistant professor. This webinar is part of the Lunch & Learn 10-part series on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness that runs through October. It includes one-hour lessons on physical, environmental, financial, occupational, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social wellness.

Participants who view an entire webinar and complete the five-minute questionnaire will be entered to win one of 15 fit bits.

Club Opera Dinner

SOMERS POINT – The Somers Point Unique Experiences Club will host the second Opera Dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Gregory’s Restaurant, 900 Shore Road, Somers Point.  

This event will feature three professional opera singers accompanied by a award winning keyboardist performing some of opera most famous arias.  The evening will also feature a four-course Italian dinner. Cost is $50 per person.  Seating is limited.

Walking Club

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Walking Club, formed last summer, invites everybody to join weekly walks on the Ocean City Boardwalk on Friday mornings.

People of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to meet outside the Ocean City Music Pier at 8 a.m. each Friday to walk the length of the Boardwalk. The Ocean City Healthy Living Advisory Council created the group as a way for people to get healthy and meet new friends. 

The Boardwalk is 2.45 miles long, and round trip is (4.9 miles). Walks may take about 90 minutes, but participants are welcome to stop at any point along the route. The HLAC asks everybody to grab a coffee or water and “don’t forget to bring your smile.”

NAMI Connection is a free recovery support group for adults (18+) living with a mental health condition. SOMERS POINT – The Dance Society’s Tuesday night dances are at Somers Point Fire Co. No. 1’s hall at 447 Bethel Road, Somers Point.

Call for free Family

Crisis Intervention

Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).

FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.

FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

Free screening

for depression 

Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.

The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey. 

Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
