Historical Museum

Lecture Series

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Historical Museum Summer Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 12.

The lecture are held in the lecture hall of the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave. Admission is free and an ASL interpreter will sign each presentation.  The schedule, topic and speakers are: Aug. 15, The Legendary Hessian Island, William Lewis, author of “South Jersey Legends & Lore”; Aug. 22, Atlantic City – America’s Playground, Bob Ruffalo; Aug. 29, “Great Storms of the Jersey Shore,” Scott Mazzella, co-author; Sept. 5, History of the Boardwalk, Mary Stewart; and Sept. 12, “Shore Chronicles: Tales from the Jersey Shore,: Margaret Bucholz, author.”

Pops presents

Strictly 60s Band

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Pops is presenting The Strictly 60s Band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Ocean City Music Pier. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Ocean City Pops.

Cost is $37 per ticket available at ocnj.us/boxoffice.

The concert features the best songs and sounds of the 1960s with a playlist that includes the British Invasion, Motown, rock ’n’ roll and Doo Wop.

Senior Art Show

to open Aug. 19

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Division of Aging and Disability Services has announced the 48th annual Senior Art Show is set to open Aug. 19 at Atlantic Cape Community College’s Cape May Court House campus. 

Artists age 60 and older will display their work. Artwork can be viewed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday through Aug. 26 at the college. A ceremony to recognize participants is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Aug. 27.

The show features professional and amateur categories in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital/computer art, mixed media, craft and print. 

Winners will be eligible for entry into the 58th annual New Jersey State Senior Citizens Art Show. Call at (609) 886-2784 for more information.

NAMI Family

It is time to register for NAMI Family to Family eight-week educational program for family, friends, and significant others of adults with mental health conditions. 

NAMI Family to Family provides information about anxiety, depressive disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other mental health conditions. Topics covered include communication, problem solving, treatment, resources and recovery. The course is designed to increase the understanding and advocacy skills while helping participants maintain their own well-being. NAMI Atlantic Cape May offers this program free of charge to participants, beginning Tuesdays Sept. 3 through Oct. 22 from 6:30-9 p.m. via Zoom. Annual Luncheon

OCEAN CITY – “Music through the Ages” is the theme of the Friends of the Ocean City Pops Annual Luncheon set for Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Flanders Hotel, 719 E. 11th Street, Ocean City.  Doors open at 11:30 a.m. 

The event continues to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Pops Orchestra, the oldest municipal orchestra in the United States, and will feature Brandon Tomasello, a popular vocalist who will perform selections from Frank Sinatra’s Great American Songbook.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) Program will hold the virtual Lunch & Learn Program: The 8 Dimensions of Wellness-Social Wellness from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.

“There are 8 Dimensions of Wellness defined by SAMSHA and this program will focus on the importance of social wellness for better life-balance and stress reduction,” said Chris Zellers, CHS educator/assistant professor. This webinar is part of the Lunch & Learn 10-part series on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness that runs through October. It includes one-hour lessons on physical, environmental, financial, occupational, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social wellness.

Participants who view an entire webinar and complete the five-minute questionnaire will be entered to win one of 15 fit bits.

Club Opera Dinner

SOMERS POINT – The Somers Point Unique Experiences Club will host the second Opera Dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Gregory’s Restaurant, 900 Shore Road, Somers Point.  

This event will feature three professional opera singers accompanied by a award winning keyboardist performing some of opera most famous arias.  The evening will also feature a four-course Italian dinner. Cost is $50 per person.  Seating is limited.

Walking Club

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Walking Club, formed last summer, invites everybody to join weekly walks on the Ocean City Boardwalk on Friday mornings.

People of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to meet outside the Ocean City Music Pier at 8 a.m. each Friday to walk the length of the Boardwalk. The Ocean City Healthy Living Advisory Council created the group as a way for people to get healthy and meet new friends. 

The Boardwalk is 2.45 miles long, and round trip is (4.9 miles). Walks may take about 90 minutes, but participants are welcome to stop at any point along the route. The HLAC asks everybody to grab a coffee or water and “don’t forget to bring your smile.”

NAMI Connection is a free recovery support group for adults (18+) living with a mental health condition. Participants gain the support of peers who understand their experience and gain insight into others’ challenges and successes. The group encourages empathy, productive discussion and a sense of community.

SOMERS POINT – The Dance Society’s Tuesday night dances are at Somers Point Fire Co. No. 1’s hall at 447 Bethel Road, Somers Point.

Call for free Family

Crisis Intervention

Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).

FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.

Free screening

for depression 

Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.

The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey. 

Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
