UPPER TOWNSHIP – The Cape May County Library Children’s Department will be hosting a Space Odyssey Crafts program. It is a drop-in style program that celebrates outer space with out-of-this world crafts. Supplies will be available between the designated hours.

Solidarity Craft 

Market in O.C

OCEAN CITY – The second annual St. Damien Solidarity Market will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the St. Damien Parish Center, 1337 Asbury Ave., Ocean City.

Shop a diverse collection of beautiful, handmade crafts and products created by women in Africa. Proceeds from the sale directly support training and employment to marginalized women. Also featured this year are ceramic creations from Mud Girls of Atlantic City, a non profit providing training and opportunity to at risk women.

Admission is free and a selection of light refreshments will be offered.

Jolly Trolley Tour

OCEAN CITY – Tickets are on sale now for a new holiday trolley tour geared toward families with young children.

The Jolly Trolley Lights Tour Dec. 17 will include a tour of Ocean City homes decorated for the holidays, a photo with Santa and a Christmas craft project. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly in their pajamas and enjoy hot cocoa and other treats.

Two tours are scheduled: 5 to 7 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. They will be staged from the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Avenue.

TUCKAHOE — The “Handmade in America” Professional Craft Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Upper Township Community Center, 1790 Route 50 in Tuckahoe.

Every vendor is from New Jersey and every item in the show is made by skilled craftsmen. Admission is free; donations are always welcome.

Vendors include Madd Potters from Cape May, Merry May’s Quilts & Other Fun Stuff from Tuckahoe, S&S Kitchens, Anthony Niglio’s Dream Trader jewelry, South Dennis Heritage Arts and Bob Peterson’s Decoy Carvings.

Other activities include a Lucky Number Auction, quilt raffle, food and live music by Linda & Ollie from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the South Jersey chapter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Steward program

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County will offer the Rutgers Environmental Steward Program starting in the new year. 

A Rutgers Environmental Steward is a volunteer who is trained in the environmental issues affecting New Jersey and works to help solve local problems.

County residents who are interested in improving the environment can learn how to create a conservation project in their community by joining the volunteer program that helps members of the public learn specific steps leading to a positive effect on local ecosystem. 

Weekly classes taught by leading researchers from Rutgers, government agencies and the nonprofit sector will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 21, 2025. 

About 11 online and five in-person sessions will be held along with field trips to environmentally significant sites. Topics will include climate change, solid waste, recycling, soil health, alternative energy, water quality, habitat conservation, pollinator protection and environmental policy.

Participants will be required to complete a 60-hour project in their community to become certified. The cost for the program is $300 before Dec. 31 and $325 starting Jan. 1. CAPE MAY — The Cape Women’s Resource Fund will host a holiday luncheon and a play Nov. 24 in Cape May.

Doors open at noon for lunch at Elaine’s, 513 Lafayette St., followed by Cape May Stage’s production of “The Gift of the Magi.”

There also will be gift baskets in a no-bid auction and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds benefit the group’s scholarship fund. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite holiday pin or sweater; prizes will be awarded for the most creative and festive.

Pup Strut supports

Marine Mammal Center

BRIGANTINE – The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is hosting a fun-filled mile walk with furry friends Saturday, Nov. 9.

The Pup Strut event will be at 16th Street and Ocean Avenue, Brigantine, and proceeds will benefit the MMSC. Participants can enjoy a leisurely stroll with their pups along the beach and take photos with the MMSC’s very own “Luseal.” Humans and canine companions will be treated to a beautiful day at the beach, complete with lively music, pet-friendly vendors, and a goodie bag filled with treats like a Cupid the Seal bandana, pop-up water bowl, and other fun surprises.

‘Beauty of the Shore’

SOMERS POINT – The Somers Point Arts Commission is offering a three-session photography course this fall to capture the “Scenic Beauty of the Shore.” 

Dates are Saturdays Nov. 9, 16 and 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Somers Point Senior Center, 22 North Ambler Road, Somers Point. Cost is $30 for all three sessions. Anyone 18 and over is welcome to register regardless of level of skill. Please bring only cameras that have manual controls (no cell phones). 

Participants will learn incredible photo taking techniques from an experienced professional and topics will include planning, capturing and editing that perfect seashore photo.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Learn how to Compost at home by attending the program, Home Composting, presented by Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The class will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at RCE of Cape May County, 355 Court House – South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House.

The presenter will be Belinda Chester, program associate II, RCE, Atlantic County. Participants will learn the science behind compost, how to compost at home, and why compost is good for plants and the planet.

OCEAN CITY – The Grief Support Group, open to any adult who is grieving the death of a loved one, is invited to attend a safe and caring gathering at 6:30 p.m. every other Tuesday year-round at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, corner of Eighth Street and Central Avenue, Ocean City. 

There is no need to be a church member or from Ocean City to attend. “It is a time to share your story, to tell of your grief and talk of your loved one. It is a place where you may express your feelings, without judgment, nor fixing. Everything is confidential and you, as well, are privileged and entrusted with the heart-felt stories of others. No matter when your loss, it is healing to acknowledge its place in your life.”

Holiday bus trip

to New York City

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County 4-H Program Advisory Council is hosting the  third annual 4-H Holiday Bus Trip to New York City on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The bus trip is open to the public and only costs $60 for transportation to and from the city. While in the city, participants will be on their own to see a show, shop, visit a museum, or just walk around and enjoy the holiday sights.

The bus will depart from Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road at 7 a.m. and leave New York City at 7 p.m.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family and Community Health Sciences Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group will meet 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House.

Special guest speaker will be Megan Santiago, health educator, Cape May County Health Department. She will speak about the importance of keeping minds sharp. Attendees will learn to recognize the effects of normal aging on the brain, several ways to improve brain function, and how to prevent senior moments by doing specific brain exercises.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program meets 10 months each year providing information and support to Cape May County grandparents raising their grandchildren. New families always welcome! Childcare is provided and a light supper will be served at 5 p.m. with the program following at 5:30 p.m.

The parade will begin at Dawes Avenue School and follow Shore Road to City Hall.  They are currently seeking parade participants – marching groups, float entries, decorated trucks, flatbeds, Landscape trailers, boats or any other vehicle. Call for free Family

Crisis Intervention

Families who are experiencing serious difficulties in managing the behavior of children 10 to 17 years old for whom they are responsible can seek assistance through the Atlantic County Juvenile/Family Crisis Intervention Unit (FCIU).

FCIU is a legally mandated program that is available 24 hours a day to intercede in family conflicts and help strengthen the family unit. Its services include short-term crisis stabilization, family assessment, case management, treatment planning and referrals to appropriate community-based services.

FCIU is available to meet in-person by appointment with youth and their families from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 101 Shore Road in Northfield. Appointments can also be conducted by phone or as a virtual meeting to help de-escalate and resolve family conflicts.

Free screening

for depression 

Online screening for depression and postpartum depression is available at mhaac.info/screening.

The confidential screening involves 10 questions related to topics such as sleep habits, appetite, concentration and level of energy. Resources and recommendations are offered at the end of the survey. 

Anyone who wants to take the screening but needs assistance can call The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County at (609) 652-3800. Staff are available throughout the year by phone or by appointment. No cost, no insurance needed.
