Red Raider girls win county track title

Senior Elaina Styer wins three events and helps 4×400 relay to a victory

OCEAN CITY – The Red Raider girls won the Cape May County Track and Field Championship May 18 at Carey Stadium, taking first place in numerous events.

Coach Tim Cook’s Ocean City High School team finished with 172 points. Middle Township was second with 108, Lower Cape May third with 51, Wildwood fourth with 14 and Wildwood Catholic fifth with 3.

Senior Elaina Styer was a quadruple winner, taking the long jump, high jump and shot put, and coming from behind in the 4×400 relay to give Ocean City gold in that event as well.

Styer won the long jump with a leap of 17’7.5” with teammates Sophia Curtis (15’7.5”) and Tricia Nicoletti (15’5.5”) third and fourth.

She tossed the shot 31’7”. Teammate Sophia Whelan, a junior, was second at 28’11.25”.

In the high jump, Styer cleared 5’ to win with junior McKenna Chisholm second at 4’10” and freshman Callie Duff third at 4’8”.

As the anchor in the 4×400 relay, Styer took the handoff about 20 yards behind Middle Township’s final runner and not only passed her, but finished with some 30 yards to spare to give her and her teammates the win in 4:23.9. Middle Township was second in 4:31.03.

Sophomore sprinter Naomi Nnewihe was a double winner, taking the 100 meter and 200 meter titles.

Nnewihe won the 100 meters in 13.37 seconds with teammate Skylar Cohen, a junior, second in 13.9. Nicoletti, a senior, was fifth in 14.22.

In the 200, Nnewihe finished in 27.42 seconds, ahead of second-place finisher Reagen Powell of Middle Township, who timed in at 28.29 seconds. Ocean City freshman Jaida Dooley was fifth in 29.38.

Curtis, a junior, won the opening 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.05, a full 10 seconds ahead of the field. Teammates Duff (1:12.13) and Scarlett Fletcher (1:12.36) were second and fourth. Fletcher is a freshman.

Sophomore Chloe Care won the 1600 meters going away with a time of 5:31.96. Middle’s Sofia Jurist was second in 5:37.12. Ocean City senior Olivia Palmieri (5:47) and sophomore Zoe Zammit (5:48.46) were fifth and sixth.

Middle’s Powell won the 400 meters in 1:03.23 with Dooley second in 1:05.16 and teammates Grace Tedesco and Mackenzie Caprioni fifth and sixth.

Sophomore Red Raider Emily Swan was second in the 100 hurdles in 18.99 seconds behind Iyanna Bennett of Middle Township, who finished in 17.38. Duff was fifth in 19.4.

Lower Cape May freshman Jenna Hill won the 800 meters in 2:30.14. Ocean City junior Frankie Ritzel was second in 2:32.20 and teammates Abby Inserra sixth in 2:46.05 and Cheryl Connell eighth in 2:47.39.

Ocean City sophomore Maeve Smith was far ahead of the field in the 3200 meters, winning in a time of 11:25.8. Middle Township’s Kamryn Super was second in 13:18.46 and Red Raider Sadie Heyman, a freshman, was third in 13:21.92.

Paulina Rios of Middle Township won the pole vault clearing 8’6”. Ocean City’s Cohen was second at 8’.

Bennett won the triple jump for Middle with her leap of 34’5”. Ocean City’s Madden Rihl (31’7.25”), Nicoletti (29’2.75”) and Fletcher (28’11.25”) were second, third and fourth.

Middle Township’s Daniella Oliver won the discus with a throw of 106’9” and teammate Camille Harris was second at 98’0”. Ocean City’s Whelan was third at 83’2” and teammate Corinne Williams, a junior, was fifth at 77’9”.

Williams won the javelin with her throw of 78’7” with Whelan fourth at 68’10”.

The Ocean City girls are competing in the Cape-Atlantic League Track and Field Championships at 4 p.m. today at Bridgeton High School.
