OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City High School boys and girls track teams won the Cape May County Track and Field Championships last week at Carey Stadium.
For the girls, Alexa Palmieri and Elaina Styer were double winners and for the boys, Dan Givens and Brad Jamison each won two events.
Palmieri won the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races and Styer won the long jump and triple jump. Styer leapt 16’4.75” in the long jump and 34’5.5” in the triple jump.
Givens was Styer’s counterpart on the boys team, winning the long jump with a distance of 20’10.25” and triple jump, going 42’8.5”. Jamison won the javelin, throwing 160’1” and shot put with a toss of 42’0.5”.
The Red Raider girls won the five-team meet with 215 points. Lower Cape May Regional edged Middle Township for third place with 43 points, compared to Middle’s 42, Wildwood Catholic was fourth with 23 points and Wildwood High School fifth with 9 points.
The boys also won handily with 193 points. Middle Township was second with 60, Lower Cape May third with 56, Wildwood fourth with 19 and Wildwood Catholic fifth with 2.
The Ocean City girls won a majority of events on the day. Nya Gilchrist took the 100 meters in 13.66 seconds and Aila Troxel the 200 meters in 27.27 seconds.
Erin Hanlon won the 400 meters in 59.59 seconds. Morgan Krier won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.07 seconds.
Birdie Stewart took gold in the pole vault, clearing 10,’ and Stephanie Carey cleared 4’8” to win the high jump.
Joni Dice won the discus with a throw of 88’10”.
The Red Raiders took a pair of relay races. Gilchrist, Mallory Gould, Tricia Nicoletti and Troxel teamed up to win the 4×100 in 52.69 seconds.
Stewart, Krier, Maggie Halbruner and Hanlon won the 4×400 in 4:15.73.
Boys winners
In addition to Jamison and Givens, other Red Raider boys took home the gold from the meet.
Tyler Greene won the 1600 meters in 4:29.9.
Elijah Cochran took the 110 high hurdles in 16.73 seconds and Brendan Schlatter won the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 1:00.08.
The Ocean City boys also won all three relay races.
Cochran, Brett Oves, Evan Mensh and Givens combined to win the 4×100 in 47.12 seconds. Ocean City won the 4×400 in 3:28.97 with Drew Tarr, Schlatter, Josh Hutchinson and Greene.
They wrapped up the relays by winning the 4×800 with Nicholas Ferzetti, Chris Sardy, Nick Scarangelli and Reece Wagner. Their time was 8:49.54.
Red Raider Kelly Nasir won the high jump, clearing 5’6”.
The Ocean City boys and girls travel to Delsea Friday and Saturday for the Group III sectional meet.
