OCEAN CITY – Ocean City has an ordinance that requires people wear shoes, sandals or other protective devices when walking on the boardwalk or its steps.
It’s unlawful to be on the boardwalk without footwear to help prevent injuries. It’s a smart law, and many people probably wish they had taken it more seriously at some point in their lives.
Splinters come in all sizes, but whether big or small, they’re always annoying and painful. I think everyone has probably gotten one at some point — if you haven’t, you’re one of the lucky few.
While it’s easy to forget the importance of shoes, Ocean City’s ordinance serves as a reminder to protect ourselves. It’s a rule that helps us avoid some common problems.
The Ocean City Beach Patrol first aid stations regularly deal with splinters, and people are often surprised when our EMTs tell them they can’t remove foreign objects due to their certification rules. That is the case for most EMTs in New Jersey. However, we still can offer help with a disposable splinter remover, some soapy water, a band-aid and, of course, a smile.
Also, let’s not forget about sand spurs — those pesky burrs from invasive weeds that seem to attach to everything. They’re almost as bad as splinters, especially when they end up in your foot.
I have sandals on 95% of the time, but on the rare occasion I don’t, I always step carefully. Even after years of walking the same path, I’ve learned to stay alert to potential splinter hazards and rough spots.
It’s smart to be prepared when heading to the beach. A small medical kit with items such as tweezers, a disinfecting wipe and a band-aid can go a long way in helping you handle small injuries such as splinters or cuts from seashells. It’s a simple way to make sure you’re ready for whatever the beach throws your way.
