Oliver Martin Muzslay of Ocean City, NJ and Surprise, AZ passed away Oct. 4, 2024 at home at the age of 83 after a long battle with leukemia.
Born June 10, 1941, Ollie grew up in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. He graduated from Frankford High School class of January 1959 and Temple University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Ollie began his teaching career in 1966 and retired in 2004. For 33 years he taught in the Upper Township School District. Ollie was the first PE teacher in Upper Township and became coach of the girls basketball, coed volleyball and boys and girls soccer teams. Ollie started the soccer program in Upper Township and was instrumental in starting the soccer recreation youth program in Ocean City in 1977. Ollie was teacher of the year in Upper Township in 2000. Ollie was involved in starting the Ocean City boys and girls crew programs. In the early 80’s Ollie was on the Ocean City Community Center Board of Directors. He officiated high school football and soccer and was president of the South Jersey Football Officials Association.
Since Ollie spent every summer of his youth at his grandmother’s house in Ocean City with his brother, Robert, and 2 sisters, Barbara Haas and Paula North, becoming a lifeguard as soon as he was old enough was no surprise. Ollie loved being part of the Ocean City Beach Patrol. He worked his way up to captain in 1983 and served in that position until 2000. Ollie believed that if you love your job you will never work a day in your life. He lived by that saying. He loved teaching and loved working on the beach patrol. Having his 3 sons become lifeguards was icing on the cake.
Ollie was an avid player of pickleball, golf, softball and poker.
Ollie married the love of this life, Erika, in 1965. Ollie is survived by his wife, his 3 sons, Lance, Drew and Heath (Jeannette) and his 3 grandchildren, Keegan, Braden and Cade.
