Old-style Ocean City beach house upgraded for modern taste, near boardwalk and beach

OCEAN CITY — It’s on Park Place between Third and Fourth streets and, like in the game Monopoly, it’s close to Boardwalk. Unlike in Monopoly, it’s also just a clam shell’s throw from the beach and has a nautical theme.

Real estate agent Sharon Grimes calls the home at 842 Park Place a “seashore charmer.” I call it an old-school Ocean City classic.

Part of a triplex that appears to have been wrought from a single-family home, the 1,400-square-foot Unit 1 is no cottage — sporting four bedrooms and two bathrooms with a wide-open great room.

“Relax and enjoy sea breezes on the spacious front porch of this perfect getaway,” Grimes stated in her write-up on the property, noting it is being sold furnished.

Located midway between Atlantic and Corinthian avenues, it’s just a short walk away from the beach.

“This prime location is just one and a half blocks away from the beach and famous boardwalk,” Grimes stated.

Out front, steps lead up on the left of the triplex to a shady porch with wrought-iron railings.

White and yellow-striped awnings create both shade and a seashore aesthetic on two sides of the porch, where there are multiple options for sitting and relaxing in the cozy, cushioned couches.

The front door opens onto an open living space, with a sightline straight through to the kitchen in the rear.

The living room is in the front and features a triple window to the left whose light shines on an old-style brick fireplace across the room. It has been converted to gas. Paneling painted in a topographical style lines the walls.

A sofa and three cushy armchairs rest atop an area rug, all centered around the fireplace.

Overhead, the 9-foot ceiling features exposed, rough-hewn beams running left to right throughout the living room and dining room areas. It looks like a terrific candidate for the trendy plank ceiling found in many upscale homes.

Moving toward the kitchen, the dining area features a cute square table with six chairs beneath a hanging lamp, just inside a second triple window. Two wooden curio cabinets add a little bit of a rustic flair to the décor.

“The airy dining room will be a favorite for gatherings large and small,” Grimes wrote.

The home harkens back to old Ocean City in its bedroom locations. A doorway off the living room area opens onto a two-room suite with a full bathroom in the middle.

On the right, the first bedroom has a queen-size bed atop wall-to-wall carpeting, paneled walls and a double window on the side, providing natural light. The second bedroom is set up with twin beds, and each has its own closet.

The bathroom has a tile floor, bead board wainscoting and a tub/shower with tiled walls. The vanity has a clamshell-shaped sink.

Back in the great room, a doorway off the dining area opens onto the master suite. The bedroom is to the left and features a king-size bed atop carpet and a wall-mounted television beneath a ceiling fan.

The private bathroom has a tiled shower with a sliding glass door and wainscoting on the walls.

The kitchen has a tile floor, white cabinets and Corian countertops. Appliances include a dishwasher and four-burner electric range with a microwave above on one side and a counter with three barstools alongside the refrigerator on the other side.

A laundry room/mud room is in the back of the house. There is a full-size washer and dryer with cabinets and a counter to the left, as well as a door opening onto the back patio just outside the fourth bedroom.

This room includes bunk beds and a half-bath.

The home is listed for $649,000 with Sharon Grimes of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Fox & Roach Realtors, who said the home offers an investment opportunity typically generating more than $30,000 a year.
