Ocean City’s Smith, Curtis, Mainland’s Day South Jersey sectional champions

Raider 4×800 relay time sets meet record

FRANKLINVILLE — Raider junior Maeve Smith is a triple South Jersey sectional track champ who helped set a meet record, senior teammate Sophia Curtis brought home two gold medals and Mustang junior Sofia Day earned a gold medal. 

The South Jersey Group III sectional track and field meet was Friday and Saturday at Delsea Regional High School and saw medal-winning performances by Ocean City and Mainland Regional athletes along with top-10 Mustang and Raider finishes. Overall, the Ocean City girls finished third as a team with 80 points behind first-place Winslow with 129 and second-place Timber Creek with 102. Mainland was fourth with 56.

Ocean City and Mainland had four of the top five finishes in the 1600 meters.

Smith won in 5:03.77 with Day second in 5:08.16, Raider junior Chloe Care fourth in 5:14.66 and Mustang Emma Preissman fifth in 5:19.01.

Smith and Care went 1-2 in the 3200 meters with Mainland senior Gillian Lovett (11:22.74) third and Mustangs senior Sophie Goldstein (11:56.34) ninth. Smith’s winning time was 11:03.1. Care finished in 11:08.5.

Day won the 800 meter run in 2:13.61. Ocean City freshman Carly Godfrey was fourth in 2:19.16, while Preissman (2:20.7) and senior teammate Claudia Booth (2:2:29.36) were fifth and 10th, respectively.

Curtis won the 400 meter hurdles in a close race with Timber Creek’s Nylah Jones. Curtis finished in 1:01.28 and Jones, a multiple winner at the sectionals, finished in 1:01.44. Mainland junior Aryanna Perez was ninth in 1:09.28.

Curtis also won the triple jump, breaking 40 feet with her jump of 40’4”. Mainland’s Sienna Bodkin (34’5.5”) and Perez (32’9”) were seventh and ninth, respectively.

The Raider 4×800 relay team won in impressive fashion, setting a meet recor dof 9:28.82. Smith, Care, senior Frankie Ritzel and Godfrey won in 9:28.8216 seconds ahead of second-place Moorestown. Mainland’s Lovett, junior Ava McDole and seniors Mackenzie Miller and Booth were fourth in 9:56.43.

Curtis finished third in the long jump at 17’11.75”. 

She was fourth in the 400 meter dash with her time of 56.69 seconds. Timber Creek’s Jones won in 55.53 seconds. Mainland sophomore Madison Taylor was seventh in 1:00.24.

Mustang senior Sydney Booth finished second in the javelin with a throw of 108’3”. Absegami’s Josephine Buxton won at a distance of 113’8”.

Mainland sophomore Camryn DeMorat was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles. Her time was 15.57 seconds. Timber Creek senior Guerlande Pierre won in 14.32 seconds.

Mainland’s 4×100 relay of DeMorat, seniors Bodkin and Caitlyn Lin and Taylor was third in 50.25 seconds. Ocean City’s team of freshmen Ella Miller and Alana Clevenger and juniors AnnaMaria Marczyk and Naomi Nnewihe was 10th in 52.5 seconds. Timber Creek won in 46.19 seconds.

Bodkin was third in pole vault, clearing 10’, and fellow seniors Lauren Crane (9’6”) and Monica Todorov (8’6”) were fifth and ninth, respectively. Ocean City senior Skylar Cohen was 10th at 7’6”. 

In the 4×400 relay, Ocean City finished fourth and Mainland was sixth. Winslow Township was first in 3:58.16. Raider senior Grace Tedesco, sophomore Callie Duff and freshmen Kai Linthicum and Godfrey finished in 4:08.26. Mustangs Day, Taylor, McDole and freshman Addison Pepper had a time of 4:12.35.

Raider Duff was seventh in the high jump, clearing 5’.

Mainland sophomore Anayah Usher was 10th in the shot put with her throw of 34’5.5”.
