Ocean City Brambley Golf League: Mark Franks earns solo victory last week

OCEAN CITY – The Brambley Golf League once again witnessed impressive performances as golfers teed off for their weekly competition last week. Low scores and personal best rounds were the order of the day, creating an exciting atmosphere on the greens. 

Mark Franks tied his season-low round of 41 to capture the overall Low Gross title by one stroke, edging out John McVerry, who had a season-best round of 42. Jim Downam also shot a season-best round of 45 to secure the Flight B Low Gross title, which was 6 strokes lower than his previous best round of the season. Congratulations, Jim. Mary Hughes was back in the money, shooting a 47 to emerge as the Ladies Low Gross winner. Jim McElderry shot a season-best 45 this week, 6 shots better than his previous low round, to win the Senior Division Low Gross title. McElderry has been consistently lowering his scores since the beginning of the season.

Chet Czerpak had an outstanding round this week, shooting 4 strokes under his handicap to win the Low Net Flight A title with a net score of 33. John McVerry had a net score of 34 to secure the second-place Low Net A award. Tom Bowman continued his solid play to take third-place Low Net with a net score of 35. Chris DeVaney tied his personal best round of the season, a 50, to win the Flight B Low Net award with a net score of 35. 

In the Ladies Division, Helene Weathers and Cathie Rappoport had great rounds, shooting 52 and 53, respectively, to tie for the win in the Ladies Low Net title with a net score of 33. JoAnna Johns shot a net score of 34 to take second-place in Ladies Low Net. Playing partners Arlene Gotschall and Elaine Rearden, along with Dave Phillips, shared the Senior Low Net title this week with a net score of 34. Both Arlene and Elaine tied their lowest round of the season, while Dave shot a personal best round of 50. Mike Toscano secured the Closest to the Pin Title with his tee shot landing 5’6” from the pin on hole No. 12.

Despite the abundance of low scores, birdies proved elusive this week. Notable birdie-makers were Frank Coppenbarger and Mike Toscano. Fourteen golfers shooting in the 40 this week included  Mark Franks (41), John McVerry (42), Tom Bowman (43), Joe Karwowski (44), Dave Carter (45), Jim Downam (45), Jim McElderry (45), Mike Toscano (46), Mary Hughes (47), Frank Coppenbarger (48), John Master (48,participating this week.  Mark Hemmert (49), Fred Marcell (49), and Joe Tripoli (49). There were 42 golfers this week.
