Multiple departments respond to Ocean City fire

OCEAN CITY – Multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a home at the northwest corner of 12th Street and Ocean Avenue at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17.

Black smoke that billowed out of the top floor deck of the multi-story structure was visible from across the city.

Ocean City Department of Fire & Rescue Services and Ocean City Police Department crews were immediately dispatched and responded to the scene. Fire department crews arrived on scene and found a structure fire with heavy smoke and fire from the top floor deck, according to Fire Chief Bernie Walker.

Members from the Ocean City Department of Fire & Rescue Services immediately stretched hose lines and contained the fire to the top floor deck.  A search of the structure revealed no one was inside, Walker reported.

There were no injuries to civilians or members of the fire department.  The fire was brought under control at 12:54 p.m.. 

The fire is under investigation by the Ocean City Fire Department Investigation Unit, Cape May County Fire Marshalls Office, Ocean City Police Department, and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal’s Office. 

The OCFD and Marmora Volunteer Fire Company had ladder trucks in action at the site after dousing the blaze. The Margate City Fire Department also had equipment on site.

Firefighters were seen using chain saws to cut away small sections of roof. The deck on top of the structure was charred.
