Mildred ‘Millie’ S. Wheaton, 96

Mildred “Millie” S. Wheaton, a lifelong resident of the Ocean City area, passed away peacefully at her home in Upper Township on Thursday, July 1 at the age of 96. Born in Marmora on June 14, 1924, she grew up in Upper Township, graduated from Ocean City High School in 1942 and Drexel University in 1946. She returned home to Ocean City to work and raise her children, and lived on the island for 50 years before moving back to Upper Township. She enjoyed wintering in Mt. Dora and Jupiter, FL but always returned to her beloved Ocean City in the spring.

Millie was a true matriarch of the Wheaton family, always there with support and valued advice to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Hobart Sapp of Ocean City, NJ, daughter Lynda Wheaton Comfort and husband Tex of Eustis, FL, son Jack and wife Korey of Fairfield, CT, step-daughter Boni E. Wheaton of Pipersville, PA, grandchildren Christie, Dede (Matt) and Ted, and six great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her loving companion of 18 years, Raymond “Ray” Knorr.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Theodore “Ted” C. Wheaton III, daughter-in-law Barbara Philbrick and grandson Joseph Albert “Duke” Comfort III.

Millie truly “had sand in her shoes”. She was well known in the community having lived there for so many years and being so involved. There wasn’t anything she didn’t love about Ocean City and she enjoyed being part of it all. Whether it was service organizations like the Colony Club, volunteering at the hospital, or acting in community theatre, Millie loved being active in the community. She was on the Board of the Jersey Cape organization having just recently “retired” at 94, one of the founding members of the Lightkeeper’s Society at Shore Medical Center and a generous contributor to Advent Health Waterman Hospital as well. She loved her golf at Greate Bay CC and had been an active member of Ocean City Yacht Club for many years.

Due to COVID-19, a celebration of life will come at a future date. The family requests that any contributions go to Shore Medical Center (100 Medical Center Way, Somers Point, NJ 08244) or Advent Health Waterman Foundation (1500 Waterman Way, Tavares, FL 32778) in Millie’s memory.
