Mainland’s Osunniyi 2X winner at CAL meet

He wins triple and high jumps; other Mustangs, Red Raiders win, place

BRIDGETON — Mustang senior Mawali Osunniyi won two events and teammates Leo Pierre and William Murray each took home a title at the 2023 Cape-Atlantic League Track and Field Championship on May 24 at Bridgeton High School.

Ocean City senior Nick Scarangelli also ran away with a title, winning the 3200 meters in a sweep, with teammates Kal Heyman and Ethan Buck taking second and third.

Osunniyi was ever so close to setting a personal record in the high jump, just missing on his attempts at 6’9”. He won the event by clearing 6’6”. 

He said rather than going for 6’8”, the height he had cleared multiple times, including at the Atlantic County championships, he decided he might as well try for a new personal record. Osunniyi had the height to clear the bar, but dislodged it as he went to kick his legs over.

He said with his ability to get the height, with some work on his technique he has the potential to clear not on 6’9”, but greater heights.

Osunniyi also won the triple jump with his leap of 46’6.75”. Teammate Josiah Williams, a sophomore, was fifth in the event with a distance of 43’9”.

Mainland Regional High School junior Leo Pierre won the CAL title in the 100 meters with his time of 10.93 seconds. Pierre also was fourth in the 200 meters, finishing in 23.08 seconds. Sophomore Jonathon Perez was sixth in the event in 23.24 seconds.

Pierre was part of the 4×100 relay team that finished second in 43.01 seconds.

Murray, a senior, won the long jump with his leap of 22’8”.

Fellow Mustang senior Andrew Ramos was second in the 110 high hurdles. His time was 14.9 seconds. Williams was fifth in 15.58 seconds.

William Spollen, a senior, was second in the 400 intermediate hurdles, finishing in 57.64 seconds, and teammate Khaleeb Foster, a sophomore, was eighth in 1:01.51.

Junior Ethan Bongiovanni was seventh in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:07.59.

Red Raiders at the CAL meet

Scarangelli’s winning time in the 3200 meters was 9:46.56. Sophomores Heyman and Buck finished in 10:11.48 and 10:15.04 for the sweep.

Junior Matt Hoffman was second in the 800 meters with his time of 2:00.31. Teammate Ethan Eiler was ninth in 2:11.69.

Junior Nick Layton finished second in the javelin with his throw of 152’6” and sophomore teammate Brendan Bergman was third with a distance of 140’10”.

Layton also was eighth in the pole vault, clearing 11’.

Junior James Burke was fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:00.82.

Fellow junior Talon Fischer was fifth in the 400 meters with his time of 51.81 seconds.

The boys 4×800 relay team of Buck, Robert Cesari, Erik Preisner and Caleb Aristizabal was third in 8:38.62.

Sophomore Hercules Stewart had three top-10 finishes. He was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 42’3.5”, eighth in the high jump by clearing 5’8”, and was ninth in the long jump, going 19’2.75”.

Senior Colin Dice was sixth in the discus with his throw of 144’10” and teammate Luke Smith, a sophomore, was ninth with his throw of 136’9”.

The Mustangs and the Red Raiders will now compete at the South Jersey Group III sectionals Friday and Saturday at Delsea Regional High School.
