John Brown Newcomb, Sr., 82, of Ocean City, NJ, passed away on August 1, 2023.
John was born to Ben and Margaret Newcomb on January 31, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA. John was a long-time resident of Ocean City, NJ and loved being close to the ocean and everything ‘Jersey Shore’ life has to offer. His passions were his kids and grandkids, boating, fishing, eating seafood, traveling, a cold beer at a seaside bar, tinkering, reading history, and watching the Phillies and Eagles, especially the Eagles.
John is survived by his three sons and their families, John (Jr.) and wife Deborah of Long Beach/Belmont Shore, CA, granddaughter Brittany and grandson Alec, Daniel and wife Karen, of Osprey, FL, granddaughters Devany and Bethany, and Pete and wife Lynn of Concord, MA and granddaughter Haley and grandson Blake, and his sister Jane Liddle also of Ocean City, NJ. John was predeceased by his parents Ben and Margaret and older brother Ben.
Aside from his love of family and Ocean City life, John had many interests and talents. His childhood interest in camping and scouting led to an Eagle Scout badge. He played football at Pitman High School (NJ) and in college at the University of Rhode Island where he majored in mathematics. John was a veteran having served in the US Army achieving the rank of Captain.
John’s career included working in sales and marketing positions for Mobile Oil and IBM where he was the recipient of many sales awards. He earned a CPA later in life and finished his career certifying new air traffic control systems at major airports around the US for Raytheon. All his accomplishments aside, John was well-known for being a charming guy that did things his own way and indulged in many other interests including having a private pilots license, owning, and fixing classic cars and motorcycles (he could fix anything), and knowing a little bit about every subject.
John’s family held funeral services at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 2998 Bay Avenue, Ocean City, NJ on Saturday, August 5, 2023, followed by interment at Cape May County Veterans Cemetery in Cape May Court House.
