Upper Township ‘will forever be changed’

The Beesley’s Point Development Group has been working to clear the 350-acre former B.L. England Generating Station property to make way for development of a marina, hotel, retail shops, housing and an extensive public nature installment. The BPDG bought the property in November 2021 and began a environmental cleanup of the site, which was home for many years to a coal-fired plant. Controlled Demolition Inc. demolished the plant’s cooling tower Sept. 29, 2022, and has been removing other structures on the site, which is on Great Egg Harbor Bay between Atlantic and Cape May counties. Removal of the smokestack and boiler units was tentatively scheduled for February but was set back until April 21, when only the boilers were taken down. The next step is demolishing the smokestack, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 26. ‘The landscape of Upper Township will forever be changed as Beesley’s Point Development Group announces implosion of the iconic smokestack,” the BPDG said in a statement.
