Want to join the OCBP? Suggestions to pass the test

OCEAN CITY – As we gear up for the 2025 summer season, I know many of you are excited about trying out for the Ocean City Beach Patrol. A common concern I hear from candidates is nervousness about the swim test. I get it.
Growing up, I spent most of my time surfing in Ocean City and swimming in the bay, but I wasn’t much of a pool swimmer. Even with all that experience, I still get a little nervous before a swim race. So, to all the candidates feeling nervous – you’re not alone.
My advice to nervous candidates is to focus on your strengths. The swim is just one part of the competition, and there are three other areas where you can shine. For surfers, the rescue board paddle is a great chance to show off your skills. If you’ve never been on a rescue board before, you’re welcome to visit any of our lifeguard stands and give it a try – just make sure you have a completed physical form from your doctor.
The surf dash is another chance to perform well even without being a seasoned swimmer. It’s a timed competition where you run from the beach start line into the break, touch a stake pole, and race back to the finish line. My tip: give it everything you’ve got. Use high knees to cover as much ground as possible before the water gets deep. When you reach the pole, try to catch a wave back in and finish strong – this is usually the last physical part of the test.
Finally, the interview.
Throughout the competition, candidates are observed based on athletic skills, maturity and character. The interview is where we get to meet you. My advice: relax, be yourself and answer the questions as honestly as you can. We want to get to know you, not to trick you with difficult questions.
Remember, you’ll be surrounded by others working toward the same goal, and that shared energy will help you get through the competition. Bring your family and friends down to support you and cheer you on!
If you’re not selected this time, don’t be discouraged. Use the day as an experience-builder and keep pushing forward. We sometimes schedule a second tryout in August, and if selected, you’ll be automatically accepted into Rookie School for the 2026 season.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the results — it’s about enjoying the experience, pushing yourself, and having fun with the process.
We look forward to seeing you at the tryouts on June 7, starting at 8 a.m. at the 18th Street Beach. For more information, visit: https://www.ocnj.us/departments/OCBP/ocbptest.
Good luck, and I’ll see you out there!
