OCEAN CITY — Major improvements are coming soon to the fishing pier on the north side of the bridge spanning Great Egg Harbor Inlet.
The Cape May County Bridge Commission announced that the pier will be temporarily closed for improvements and beautification enhancements. The pier is anticipated to reopen prior to Memorial Day, weather-permitting.
Project manager Jason Futrell said the Ocean City–Longport Bridge Fishing Pier Improvement Project involves a series of maintenance repairs and beautification enhancements to improve safety, functionality and the overall public experience.
Work will include replacing timber railings; replacing lighting conduit, wiring and navigation lighting; repairing the concrete deck surface; construction of a new concrete pads and replacement of the fence enclosure; installation of new benches, picnic tables and new fish-cleaning stations with hand pumps; updated signage and trash receptacles; parking lot striping and general site improvements
Futrell said the project would not affect access to the beach popular with dog owners.
“The work is limited to the fishing pier and parking area only. Vehicular and pedestrian access to the bridge and surrounding beach areas will remain unaffected,” he said.
The pier will remain closed for the duration of construction to ensure public safety.
