Family celebrates Shark Week

By ELAINE TITUS/For the Sentinel

OCEAN CITY — For more than 56 years, Ocean City has been the vacation spot of the Raymond Titus family gatherings.

Since the movie “Jaws” came to the big screen 50 years ago, the Titus family has continued its tradition of celebrating Shark Week.

Traditionally, the family has rented a home for the week on Wesley Avenue near Bob’s Grill and the end of the boardwalk.

At times there were as many as 16 or 17 family members housed together and yet there were always wonderful memories made each year.

Early mornings were greeted by Raymond “Pappy” Titus as he was a walker and would traverse the beach at his heightened pace even though he was small in stature.

After breakfast, which resembled a restaurant due to the great number of people, the family would pack up and go to the beach for several hours, enjoying the waves, playing in the sand or volleyball or resting under the boardwalk in their beach chairs.

In the early years, there was room to accommodate that rest spot. Once the sun rose and the heat of the day was upon them,  they all packed up and returned to have lunch.

The afternoons were spent playing cards or board games. Once dinnertime arrived, another full course was prepared for the family before they sometimes headed for the boardwalk.

Today, four of the five generations of the Titus family, some of whom viewed the original “Jaws” movie as children, continue to enjoy the beaches, the boardwalk and the many sites and foods available to Ocean City’s many visitors.
