Dave Carter gets first solo victory of the year in Brambley Golf League

By THE HANDICAPPER V

OCEAN CITY – The Brambley Golf League saw some impressive scores last week despite the scorching heat. Dave Carter shot his best round of the year, a 43, to capture the overall Low Gross title, narrowly edging out Toni Herting and Mark Hemmert by one stroke.

Dave has been a nipping at the heals of the winners all year and nice to see him on top of the leader board.  There was a three-way tie for the Flight B Low Gross title, with Bill Gardner, Bruce Johns, and Dan White all carding a 49. This round was Bruce Johns’ personal best of the season, and Bill and Dan have been models of consistency this year. Jo Ann Bonanni emerged as the Ladies Low Gross winner with a round of 49, narrowly edging out Mary Beth Quinlan. Ron Bush shot his best round of the season, a 46, to secure the Senior Division Low Gross title.

Chet Czerpak had an outstanding round, shooting 3 strokes under his handicap to win the Low Net Flight A title with a net score of 34. Mark Hemmert tied a personal best this week, shooting a 44 to secure the second-place Low Net A award. Hemmert appears poised to challenge for the Overall Low Gross award if he continues to play like this. Jim Downam and Mike Bravoco, both new players to the league, tied for the Flight B Low Net award with a net score of 35. For the second week in a row, Chris Devaney finished with a net score of 36 to secure third-place Low Net B honors.

In the Ladies Division, Mary Beth Quinlan shot her best round of the season, a 51, which was 7 strokes under her handicap, to secure the Ladies Low Net title. Merry Wagner had a solid round to secure Ladies Low Net second place with a net score of 36. Jim McElderry and Arlene Gotschall played well this week to share the Senior Low Net title with a net score of 34. Walt Thompson was back in the money this week, taking third place Low Net in the Senior Division with a net score of 36. Derek Rearden secured the Closest to the Pin contest  with his tee shot landing 24’2” from the pin on No. 12.

Birdies were extremely hard to come by this week, but those carding birdies included Ron Bush, Dave Carter, and Walt Thompson. Sixteen golfers shot in the 40 this week, including Dave Carter (43), Toni Herting (44), Mark Hemmert (44), Mark Franks (45), John McVerry (45), Ron Bush (46), Chet Czerpak (46), Mike Toscano (47), Carmine Bonanni (48), JoAnn Bonanni (49), Bill Gardner (49), Bruce Johns (49), John Master (49), and Dan White (49).

The Brambley Golf League plays every Monday morning at the Ocean City Municipal Golf Course. Despite the heat, 40 golfers were able to participate last week.
