COVID-19 numbers lowest in Cape; more cases in Atlantic

Over the past week, new COVID-19 cases have remained low in Cape May County, with one day showing no new cases. One coronavirus-related death, reported Saturday, and three more Monday, has brought the total to 53. One death was in Ocean City, another in West Cape May and the others in Middle and Dennis Township.

In Atlantic County, there have been 112 new cases between June 4 and 8 and seven deaths and health officials report of the total of 2,449 cases since the pandemic began, more than 1,100 victims have recovered. There have been 170 deaths linked to the coronavirus.

The New Jersey Department of Health has reported more than 164,164 cases and 12,214 fatalities from COVID-19 statewide as of Monday, June 8, and noted Cape May County has the fewest cases (659) and fatalities in the state.

Cape May County

On Monday, the Cape May County Department of Health reported an 82-year-old woman from Ocean City, a 55-year-old man from West Cape May, and an 87-year-old woman from Dennis Township had died, but there were only three new cases of COVID-19.

The daily coronavirus numbers have been low since Wednesday, June 3, when the Department of Health reported no new cases for the first time since April 5. On June 4, there were two new cases in the county, one in a long-term care facility. On June 5, seven in communities and one in long-term care; on June 6, three in communities and one in long-term care, and the death of a 71-year-old woman in Middle Township; and on June 7, three new cases in communities and none in long-term care.

The largest number of cases in the county have been in Lower Township, where there were 26 active cases as of Monday, June 8. So far there have been 206 cases in the township, nearly evenly split between the community and long-term care facilities. Of the 30 deaths in the township, 27 were in long-term care.

Middle Township has 26 active cases as of Monday and has seen 125 overall since the pandemic began, with three fatalities in the community and one in long-term care.

Upper Township and Dennis Township had 10 and seven active COVID-19 cases as of Monday. There have been 65 cases and two fatalities in Upper and 63 cases and four fatalities in Middle.

Woodbine has had 56 active cases and nine deaths, including seven in long-term care, and Ocean City has had 43 cases, one death in long-term care and the death reported Monday in the community. There are now seven active cases in Ocean City and nine in Woodbine, seven of them in long-term care.

Wildwood has had 37 cases, Wildwood Crest 14, North Wildwood 19 and West Wildwood seven. There are now eight active cases in North Wildwood, seven in Wildwood, four in West Wildwood and three in Wildwood Crest. There have been no COVID-19 fatalities in any of the Wildwoods.

Cape May has five active cases as of Monday and nine overall, West Cape May had no active case and four overall and there have been no cases in Cape May Point. The death in West Cape May was the first on Cape Island.

Sea Isle City, Avalon and Stone Harbor have no active cases and no fatalities, and three, seven and one case overall, respectively, all recovered.

Testing locations for COVID-19 now include Cape Regional Urgent Care in Wildwood, Marmora, and Cape May Court House, Cape Regional Hospital, Complete Care Health Network, and CVS in Seaville. Proof of insurance is not needed at the Cape Regional Urgent Care locations. There is also other out of county testing options such as the state testing facilities. 

Atlantic County

In Atlantic County, the Division of Public Health reported no new deaths Monday, one death each on Sunday and Saturday, three deaths Friday and two deaths Thursday.

The COVID-19 fatalities have included an 89-year-old Margate woman, a 74-year-old Weymouth Township man, a 50-year-old Atlantic City woman, 59-year-old Absecon woman, 72-year-old Galloway woman, 84-year-old Galloway man and an 87-year-old Hammonton man.

There were 21 positive tests reported Monday among residents 8 to 102 years old; 33 cases Sunday among residents 8 to 97 years old; 26 cases Saturday on men and women from 22 to 81 years old; and 21 cases Friday – eight males from 6 to 76 years old and 13 females from 17 to 81 years old.

There have been cases in Atlantic City, Pleasantville, Northfield, Absecon, Galloway, Hammonton, Buena Borough, Buena Vista Township, Egg Harbor City, Hamilton Township, Hamilton Township, Linwood, Somers Point, Egg Harbor Township, Ventnor, Margate, Brigantine, Folsom, Mullica and Weymouth Township.

County health officials reported 1,107 victims of the coronavirus have recovered.
